We are looking for candidates for a pre-doctoral contract associated with
the research project
“Advanced Statistics and Data Science 2: New data, new models, new
challenges”
Project PID2023-148158OB-I00 funded by MCIU /AEI /10.13039/501100011033 /
FEDER, UE.
*Lead researcher:* Pedro Delicado, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya
(UPC), https://eio.upc.edu/en/homepages/delicado
*Center of affiliation: *Department of Statistics and Operational Research,
UPC, Barcelona.
*Project Summary: *In recent years, Statistics has been affected by
significant technological and scientific changes. First, there has been a
proliferation of new types of data which, in addition to their large
volume, pose other challenges that distinguish them from traditional
tabular data. Examples include data from wearable devices (e.g. for
continuous health monitoring), electroencephalograms (EEG) or social
networks (graphs). Second, Data Science has emerged with the aim of
extracting information from data using concepts and techniques developed
outside statistics: machine learning, deep learning, Artificial
Intelligence (AI). In particular, AI raises ethical challenges, such as the
transparency and accountability of algorithmic prediction models. The main
objective of this project is to address the challenges posed by new data
sets (increasingly large and complex) and new ways of analyzing them (more
flexible but less transparent than traditional statistical techniques). We
propose to pursue five lines of research:
(1) New directions in the interpretability and explainability of predictive
models.
(2) Data from wearable devices: A functional approach to data analysis.
(3) EEG data: Contributions from functional data analysis and
interpretability.
(4) Data from graphs: Bayesian prediction and modelling.
(5) Non-linear dimensionality reduction methods for big data.
*Candidate profile: *The required profile is a graduate in Mathematics,
Statistics, Data Science, Computer Science or similar, with a Master's
degree in one of these fields, a solid background in Mathematics and
Statistics, and a good academic record. The person recruited must have
advanced programming skills (at least R and/or Python; knowledge of other
languages such as C++ will be highly valued), communication skills (oral
and written; knowledge of Latex will be valued) and fluency in English
(oral and written).
*Position: *The salary is competitive with Spanish standards: €19,479.04 in
the first year, €24,348.80 in the following three years. The position will
be for 3 years.
*Deadline:* 27th October (the deadline will be possible extended)
