At the Computer Engineering Group, Faculty of Technology, Bielefeld 
University, we offer a

   PhD (or Postdoc) position with research in either visual robot 
navigation or cognitive robotics
   (full position, 3 years, pay group TV-L E13).

In the field of visual robot navigation, your task would be to develop 
methods for the visual navigation of autonomous mobile robots in indoor 
and outdoor environments, particularly for controlling cleaning robots 
and autonomous lawn mowers.

In the field of cognitive robotics, your task would be to develop 
methods for learning internal sensorimotor models in the interaction of 
a robot with its environment. These models should then be applied for 
interpreting visual information and selecting appropriate actions from a 
process of internal simulation. Neural networks or machine learning 
techniques will be used for the training of the internal models.

Your tasks will be:

- Research in one of the areas mentioned above, including the 
construction of robot hardware (70%);

- Teaching (4 course hours per week) in computer engineering and 
robotics (20%);

- Assistance with tasks in teaching, research, and organisation (10%).

We expect:

- completed university education in computer science, engineering, 
mathematics, physics, or related subjects;

- very good mathematical abilities and programming skills;

- independent, responsible, and committed working;

- very good communication skills.

We favor applicants with experience in computer vision, robotics, neural 
networks, and cognitive sciences.
