VI-DYNN'98 will combine the DYNN emphasis on biologically inspired
neural network models, especially Pulse Coupled Neural Networks (PCNN),
to the practical applications emphasis of the VI workshops.
In particular we will focus on why, how, and where to use biologically
inspired neural systems. For example, we will learn how to adapt such
systems to sensors such as digital X-Ray imaging devices, CCD's and SAR,
etc. and examine questions of accuracy, speed, etc. Developments in
research on biological neural systems, such as the mammalian visual
systems, and how smart sensors can benefit from this knowledge will also
be presented.

Pulse Coupled Neural Networks (PCNN) have recently become among the most
exciting new developments in the field of artificial neural networks
(ANN), showing great promise for pattern recognition and other
applications. The PCNN type models are related much more closely to real
biological neural systems than most ANN's and many researchers in the
field of ANN- Pattern Recognition are unfamiliar with them.

VI-DYNN'98 will continue in the spirit with the Virtual Intelligence
workshop series.
