ICANN 98, the 8th International Conference on Artificial Neural
Networks, is held 2-4 September 1998 in Skoevde, Sweden. ICANN,
the conference series of the European Neural Network Society and
Europe's premier meeting in the field, sets out to extensively
cover the whole spectrum of ANN-related research, ranging from
industrial applications to biological systems.
Carrying the heritage from Helsinki (1991), Brighton (1992),
Amsterdam (1993), Sorrento (1994), Paris (1995), Bochum (1996)
and Lausanne (1997), ICANN 98 includes a qualified scientific
program, consisting of oral and poster presentations, a special
'Industry and Research' panel session, an exhibition with
products related to ANNs, a set of tutorials on basic topics in
ANN research and development, and on top of all this a relaxed
and exciting social program.
The conference is hosted and organized by the Connectionist
Research Group at Hgskolan Skoevde in collaboration with the
Swedish Neural Network Society (SNNS) and the European Neural
Network Society (ENNS). It is supported by the International
Neural Network Society (INNS), the Asian Pacific Neural Network
Assembly (APNNA), the IEEE Neural Network Council and the IEE.

SCOPE
ICANN 98 aims to cover all aspects of ANN research, broadly
divided into six areas, corresponding to separate organizational
modules for which contributions are sought.
THEORY: This module covers the broad area of theory. Topics
include, but are not limited to: Model issues; Unsupervised/
supervised learning issues; "Life-long" learning; Inference;
Signal Processing; Neurocontrol; Analysis; Combinatorial
optimization.
APPLICATIONS: We particularly encourage submissions covering
novel ANN applications in, for example, the following areas:
Pattern recognition; Time series prediction; Optimization; Data
analysis/Data mining; Telecommunications; Control; Speech and
signal processing; Vision and image processing.
COMPUTATIONAL NEUROSCIENCE AND BRAIN THEORY: This module covers
computational models of biological neural systems, functions,
techniques and tools, e.g. Sensory and perceptual processing;
Sensory fusion; Motor pattern generation and control;
Computational neuroethology; Plasticity in the nervous system;
Neuromodulation; Cognitive neuroscience; Behavior selection;
Decision making; Cortical associative memory; Neuromorphic
computer architectures.
CONNECTIONIST COGNITIVE SCIENCE AND AI: This module covers the
use of ANNs for modeling cognitive capacities and the relation
between ANNs and AI, e.g. Vision and perception; Recognition and
categorization; Development; Representational issues; Reasoning,
problem solving and planning; Language and speech; Cognitive
plausibility; Connectionism, Hybridism and Symbolism;
Philosophical aspects and implications.
AUTONOMOUS ROBOTICS AND ADAPTIVE BEHAVIOR: This module covers
ANNs for adaptive control of autonomous robots as well as
modeling of animal behavior. Possible topics include: Adaptive
behavior in biological/artificial autonomous agents; ANN learning
methods for adaptation, control and navigation; Multi-agent
systems; Representational issues; Dynamics of agent-environment
interaction; Biologically/ethologically inspired robotics; ANNs
in evolutionary robotics and Artificial Life; Cognitive robotics.
HARDWARE/IMPLEMENTATION: This module covers ANN hardware and
implementational issues. Possible topics include: Analog/digital
implementations; Pulse stream networks; On chip learning;
Systems and architectures; Hardware implants/coupling silicon to
biological nerves; Vision and image processing.
In addition to the modules mentioned above we aim to further
promote contacts between researchers and industry. To achieve
this, a special panel session on 'Industry and Research' will be
organized. Within this session, a number of speakers will be
invited to present usage of state-of-the-art ANN technology in
Japan, Europe and the USA. We also intend to invite potential
funding agencies, in order to get their view on what kind of ANN
research will be considered for funding in the future.
