[ACT-R-users] iccm: free conference, jobs

Frank Ritter fer2 at PSU.EDU
Thu Nov 11 19:40:11 EST 2021

This issue has a free conference (ACS) on cognitive modeling, which is
an interesting effect.  Literally, free; you just have to register.
There is also an interesting conference on climate change and public
health, and numerous jobs at all levels.  There is a lot here, so there
are a lot of typos too.

United States & Europe Sponsor Solicitor — We are looking for somewhat
senior individuals in the US and Europe to solicit companies and funding
agencies to contribute to the society as sponsors.

Social Media Manager — We are looking for a junior individual to provide
announcements about upcoming events and manage social media accounts.

Webmaster — We are looking for an individual to design and develop an
ICCM Society webpage (we currently own two domain names)

Special Issue Editor — We are looking for someone to perform as the
Editor for the Best Papers of ICCM special issue in topiCS in Cognitive
Science.

Conference Chair — as much as we love Terry Stewart and his uncanny
abilities at organizing our annual ICCM conference with the Society for
Math Psych, he’s been at it for 3 years and is looking for someone to
take over. He would remain on for the upcoming conference and train the
incoming chair so that they’re prepared for organizing the conference in
the following year.

[I am not sure what to think of this, but it might be a resource. Does
not require ORCID]

Happy to share with you an updated version of Figbox.  Like to thank
everyone who reached out to me and was able to provide comments and
suggestions on how to improve the software.

Note Figbox was built and is currently maintained by volunteer scholars.

Just a quick reminder Figbox allow early career researchers (e.g.,
postdocs) the ability to promote their publications among early career
researchers in over 40 different countries around the world. Two, by
providing more junior scholars with personalized feedback and content
postdocs are awarded mentorship certificates. These verified
certificates can support the postdoc’s CV and can potentially boost the
postdoc's academic career. Three, junior scholars who are intellectually
supported by a postdoc can support the postdoc with cash donations. This
helps the postdoc with living expenses such as food and transportation
cost.

Best Regards,
Emmanuel

The Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architectures conference has its
program up and with many recordings of the single track. There is work
there that we do not always see in Cogsci or ICCM, and it is interesting.

This conference has some interesting features, that of video recordings
and being in two places where it was not held (Vienna and Fukuchiyama)
in either.  Some talks came in recorded and other talks appear to have
been recorded live. There are interesting things in this conference.  I
encourage you to look at this conference schedule.

The conference proceedings will be by Springer, and I believe do not
require ORCID. The associated journal requires ORCID identifiers for
publication. These identifiers appear to a resource grab by predatory
publishers, and I do not support them or publishers that require them
(https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.frankritter.com%2Fproblems-with-orcid.html&data=04%7C01%7Ciccm-l%40lists.psu.edu%7Cea11bdf1059f4a6a8ca908d9a574fcf1%7C7cf48d453ddb4389a9c1c115526eb52e%7C0%7C0%7C637722744143323240%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=fELLC1TmNpsP0gkDVZp2IOUCKmL0G6AfH0u1a24aGNc%3D&reserved=0).  If they are so
helpful to authors, why require them? It's a like a country so good you
need a fence to keep people in it.

9)  Neuromatch Conference 4.0,  Submission deadline 25 Oct, conference
1-2 Dec

After three conferences in 2020, Neuromatch is pleased to be holding our
fourth on 1-2 Dec 2021. Neuromatch 4.0 will be focused on Computational
Neuroscience and will be similar to the scope of the first two NMC
events in spring 2020.  Agendas from previous NMC editions (1.0, 2.0 and
3.0) can be found on the Agenda from the conference website under the
gear icon.

The scope of NMC4 includes computational neuroscience and machine
learning work that has a biological link. Registration costs are set at
15USD to cover technical costs, and if this is a difficulty, the fee can
be waived without question.

Each of our conferences has led the way in providing new innovations to
the virtual conference space, and this year we are excited to offer you:

  * A combination of the virtual with the in-person conference
experiences. You are encouraged to host or attend a local meetup,
bringing people together to enjoy the conference, without the incredible
economic and environmental costs of flying around the world.

  * The maintalks will be hosted on Crowdcast. Instead of posters, we
offer flash talks(brief pre-recorded videos), and dedicated meet up
times for discussion within Discord.

  * NMC for kids: a special session of talks for a younger audience and
the young at heart interested in neuroscience.

  * We are developing new mechanisms to connect talks in the conference

21)  2 PhD positions in Data-Driven Multi-Modal Human-Robot Interaction at
TU Delft

Job description

One of the most pressing matters that holds back robots from taking on
more tasks and reach a widespread deployment in society is their limited
ability to understand human communication and take situation-appropriate
actions. This PhD position is dedicated to addressing this gap by
developing the underlying data-driven models that enable a robot to
engage with humans in a socially aware manner.

To support long-term interaction, robots need rich models of interaction
that include their social context and allow them to act appropriately
when faced with uncertainty. Humans use a range of verbal and non-verbal
cues to regulate their interactions and are able to adapt how they
communicate and cooperate to fit the needs and preferences of their
interaction partners. Personalization and adaptation is needed to enable
robots to assist people with varying backgrounds and abilities.

The successful applicant will develop machine-learning based and
knowledge modelling techniques applied to multi-sensor data (video,
audio etc.) of human behaviour that address both the complexity of the
multi-modal nature of interactions and uncertainty regarding the sensor
data and social situation. The applicant will design and run the
experiments to evaluate the created hybrid-AI models through human-robot
interaction.

Topics of interest:

1) long-term HRI

2) affective computing
2) NLP&argument-mining
3) planning & learning for HRI
4) assistive robotics

One PhD candidate will be supervised by Dr. Frank Broz and Prof. Mark
Neerincx, focusing on planning and learning for long-term HRI. The other
PhD candidate focused more on the NLP aspects of long-term human-robot
interaction will carry out his/her PhD studies in the context of the
Designing Intelligence Lab (https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.di-lab.space%2F&data=04%7C01%7Ciccm-l%40lists.psu.edu%7Cea11bdf1059f4a6a8ca908d9a574fcf1%7C7cf48d453ddb4389a9c1c115526eb52e%7C0%7C0%7C637722744143343155%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=5hh5KlqPp78zfNwklbUjTNPoQ0bXcrRB5v7lD6znHxI%3D&reserved=0), which is an
inter-disciplinary lab between CS and Industrial Design Engineering. The
candidate will be supervised by Dr. Catharine Oertel and Prof. Catholijn
Jonker and will collaborate with design colleagues in the context of the
DI lab.

22) ICDS co-funded AI+X faculty positions at Penn State

The Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS), in partnership
with four academic colleges — the College of Agricultural Sciences, the
College of Information Sciences and Technology, the College of
Engineering and the Eberly College of Science — will sponsor four
co-funded faculty positions focused on the development of novel methods
or advanced applications in data science.

These new ICDS faculty co-hires build on Penn State’s position as a
leader in data science, AI and machine learning (ML).

The positions and their goals include:

"Soil Science for a Sustainable Future" — The College of Agricultural
Sciences

Detailed exploration of the root-soil system exceeds the capacity of
empirical research. To meet human needs in a changing climate requires
understanding, design, and optimization of plant systems. This challenge
offers one of the best opportunities to generate and develop
increasingly powerful multiscale mechanistic modelling—which is where
plant science meets AI.

"Accelerating Science Using AI Techniques" — The College of Information
Sciences and Technology

AI offers scientists a suite of tools and technologies that can help
them conduct research in nearly every discipline. Candidates for this
position will focus their research scholarship and expertise in
developing data sciences and AI methodologies for accelerating all
aspects of science. The faculty member will also engage in productive
interdisciplinary research involving the application of AI methodologies
in at least one scientific domain:

"AI for Aerospace Vehicle Design" – The College of Engineering

With a new surge in interest and investment in space flight, government
and private organizations are seeking new aerospace vehicle designs.
Without the necessary computational power to estimate and analyze a vast
design space, aerospace vehicle design remains largely guesswork. This
position will focus on bringing AI/ML to the challenges facing
multi-disciplinary design, analysis, and optimization in the design of
aerospace vehicles.

"AI to Power Biochemical, Biological Insights" – Eberly College of Science

"Big data" is being produced at an unprecedented rate in the field of
molecular biology. This provides a unique opportunity to accelerate
insights into biochemical and molecular biological systems and processes
through development and application of machine learning techniques
constrained by the laws of chemistry and physics.

The ICDS Faculty Co-Hire program started in 2016 and has grown to 33
faculty for the 2021-22 academic year. The four additional data science
positions will increase this to 37 positions in 24 depts and seven
academic colleges.

Searches for each position are expected to start in Fall 2021 or Spring
2022. For information on our current co-hires, associate, and affiliate
faculty members, please go

Resilient Cognitive Solutions has a Postdoctoral Researcher position
available for empirical studies and computational modeling in
context-aware communication interfaces research.

Real-world environments involve complex, dynamic perceptual and
cognitive demands. High-performance, time-pressured, consequential
environments usually require effective communication among team members.
Increasingly, these teams are Joint Cognitive Systems (JCS) at the
intersection of people, technologies, and the operational mission. In
collaboration with key government and industry colleagues, we are
starting a new line of fundamental research and development in
context-aware communication interfaces for next generation JCS.

This research will involve the use of adaptive information dissemination
technologies in communication-intensive, multi-tasking scenarios. We
will conduct empirical studies and develop computational models of
attention, cognition, and communication in the context of those
scenarios to explore ways to improve the timing, content, and
presentation of information. The goal is to improve the overall
robustness and resilience of mission performance under varying conditions.

At RCS, we create innovative capabilities that support, improve, and
accelerate decision making in complex, consequential environments. As a
Postdoctoral Researcher in this effort, you will play a lead role in all
aspects of the conduct of the research, including research design,
modeling, analysis, and the publication and presentation of results. You
will collaborate with a high performing team of geographically and
organizationally distributed colleagues with backgrounds in cognitive
science, cognitive systems engineering, software engineering, machine
learning, and natural language processing.

Due to contract restrictions, only U.S. citizens are eligible for this
position.

Today, we published a new paper on the climate emergency, “World
Scientists’ Warning of a Climate Emergency 2021” . In short, we found
that, despite the widespread effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, climate
action to date has been insufficient and current planetary vital signs
reflect the catastrophic consequences of conducting business as usual.
Renewing our call for transformative action, we propose specific
policies including phasing out and ultimately banning fossil fuels.

With the COP 26 UN Climate Change Conference and IPCC’s AR6 report
coming up soon, we believe it is more important than ever to raise
awareness about the climate emergency and advocate for transformative
climate action. If you feel similarly, please start sharing the article
widely, and consider re-tweeting climate emergency news and updates by
@WilliamJRipple as I will be tweeting daily on this topic for the next
couple of weeks, or feel free to make use of the materials in our World
Scientists’ Warning of a Climate Emergency 2021 Social Media Toolkit. We
need your help more now than ever as new climate-related disasters seem
to be happening on a daily basis this summer. All hands on deck!

Thanks,
