A POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN THE NEUROPHYSIOLOGY OF VISUAL MOTION
ANALYSIS is available in the laboratory of Ralf Wessel at Washington
University/St. Louis beginning in March 2001 (starting date flexible).

We study the biophysical mechanisms of visual motion processing at
the level of synapses, single neurons and dendrites, and networks. A
slice preparation of the chick tectum is used as a model system for
these studies. In this slice preparation, visual motion can be
simulated via the spatio-temporal stimulation of retinal ganglion
cell axons. At the same time motion, sensitive tectal neurons are
accessible for electrical recordings, optical imaging, and
pharmacological manipulation. Experimental approaches are
complemented by computational analysis to understand how the
interaction of biophysical mechanisms at multiple levels of neural
organization leads to motion and motion contrast sensitivity in
vertebrate brains (http://www.physics.wustl.edu/~rw/).

The highly interactive Neuroscience community at Washington
University provides opportunities for collaborative investigations
with experts who study the nervous system at different levels of
neural organization (http://www.dbbs.wustl.edu/). St. Louis offers a
range of recreational activities and affordable living
(http://medinfo.wustl.edu/pub/diso/).

Please email CV, brief summary of research experience, contact
information of two references, and list of abstracts and publications
to: rw at wuphys.wustl.edu.
