		Postdoctoral Research Position in
Statistical Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning
              for Environmental Forecasting Systems

Professors Todd Leen (Computer Science and Engineering,
http://www.cse.ogi.edu/~tleen) and Antonio Baptista
(Environmental Science and Engineering,
http://www.ccalmr.ogi.edu/baptista/baptista.html) are seeking a highly
qualified Postdoctoral Research Associate to develop and apply
statistical signal processing and pattern recognition technology to
Environmental Observation and Forecasting Systems (EOFS). The goals
of this NSF ITR project are to develop techniques that enhance the
utility of the massive amounts of observational and model data
produced by EOFS. Specific aims include detecting sensor corruption
in non-stationary spatial-temporal systems, estimating true signals
from corrupted sensor data, and detecting and characterizing regimes
where numerical model anomalies are likely.

The project centers around the COlumbia RIver Estuary (CORIE) an EOFS
system that includes numerical models and observing stations for the
river estuary and adjacent coastal waters
(http://www.ccalmr.ogi.edu/CORIE).

The project offers an opportunity to work in a interdisciplinary team
with expertise in statistical machine learning, two and
three-dimensional finite element models of river dynamics, and
year-round data collection stations throughout the estuary. We expect
that the project will provide significant challenges and advances in
the combination of timeseries with spatial statistics, and machine
learning and datamining.

Candidates should have a PhD in Statistics, EE, CS, or a related field
with experience in machine learning, nonparametric statistics, or
neural network modeling. Experience in either timeseries analysis or
spatial statistics is an advantage. The initial appointment is for
one year, but may be extended depending upon the availability of
funding. Candidates able to start by January 1, 2001 will be given
preference, although highly qualified candidates who seek a later start
date should not hesitate to apply.

If you are interested in applying for this position, please mail, fax,
or email your CV (ascii text, postscript or pdf file), a letter of
application, and a list of three or more references (with name,
address, email, and phone number) to:
