TL; DR :

PhD Position in Machine Learning, University of Hildesheim, Germany,
Apply until 2026-09-18

************************************************************

Dear all,

the Information Systems and Machine Learning Lab (ISMLL) at the University
of Hildesheim, Germany, invites applications for a

PhD Position in Machine Learning (m/f/d)
     TV-L E13, 100%, initially three years, Ref. 2026/121

The position is full-time, can be filled immediately, and is paid
according to TV-L E13 (roughly 57,000 EUR gross per year).

ISMLL is an international research group on machine learning, especially
predictive modelling and probabilistic methods for complex data and complex
decisions, with a track record at NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AAAI, ACM KDD and
ECML/PKDD. A core line of our work concerns time series forecasting for
irregular and
probabilistic data, large language models and their efficiency, graph neural
networks,
recommender systems, geometric and hyperbolic deep learning, neural
combinatorial optimization, and we take part in basic and applied research
projects in domains such as mobility, e-commerce and technology-enhanced
learning. The Institute of Computer Science has a strong focus on artificial
intelligence, with three chairs in the field.
See http://www.ismll.uni-hildesheim.de for more.

As a PhD student in our group you conduct research guided by a postdoc and
two professors, cooperate with academic and industrial partners on
real-world ML problems, and are encouraged to assist in teaching in our
International Master's Program in Data Analytics. The working language of
the group is English. Hildesheim is a town with UNESCO World Heritage
sites in the center of Germany, 30 km from Hanover and 1.5 hours by
high-speed train from Berlin.

We are looking for a gifted student who loves models, algorithms and data,
can hardly stop discussing them with others, likes to express their ideas
in formulas and programs, and now wants to get to the bottom of a complex
ML problem over the next three years. You should hold a recent Master's
degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science or a
closely related area, and bring strong analytic and programming skills,
the ability to work independently, and strong interpersonal as well as
English language skills. A Master's thesis on an ML topic will be an
asset.

Please apply online under reference number 2026/121 at

https://www.ismll.uni-hildesheim.de/apply/

with your CV and transcripts, a research statement, and a PDF of a
technical text of yours, such as a first paper, your Master's thesis or a
seminar paper. Applications are reviewed as they arrive; the portal closes
once we have found our new PhD student, so early applications are
encouraged.

For questions, please contact Prof. Dr. Dr. Lars Schmidt-Thieme
<schmidt-thieme at ismll.uni-hildesheim.de> or Prof. Dr. Tom Hanika
<tom.hanika at uni-hildesheim.de>.

The University of Hildesheim places great importance on gender equality
and diversity and particularly wants to promote the professional equality
of women and men. In the case of equal qualification and suitability,
applications from applicants with severe disabilities will be given
preferential consideration. For university degrees obtained abroad, a
certificate evaluation by the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB,
https://zab.kmk.org/de/zeugnisbewertung) is required as proof of
equivalence before hiring; please apply for this in good time.

Best regards,
Tom Hanika
