The Cyprus lnstitute {Cyl) is a non-profit science and technology educational and research institution based in Cyprus and led by an acclaimed Board of Trustees. The research agenda of Cyl falls within the following four research centers: The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC); the Science and Technology in Archaeology and Culture Research Center (STARC); the Energy, Environment and Water Research Center (EEWRC); and the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center (CARE-C). Considerable cross-center interaction is a characteristic feature of the lnstitute's culture.

The Cyprus Institute invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Fellow in to pursue research in Machine Learning.  The successful candidate will be actively engaged in cutting-edge research in terms of core problems in ML and AI such as developing efficient and interpretable deep nets, continual learning, neuro-inspired ML, self-supervised learning, and other cutting-edge topics.  The candidate should have deep understanding of machine learning fundamentals (e.g., linear algebra, probability theory, optimization) as well as broad knowledge of the state-of-the-art in AI and machine and learning. Additionally, the candidate should have extensive experience with ML programming frameworks (e.g., PyTorch).

The candidate will be working primarily with two PIs: Prof. Constantine Dovrolis (recently moved to CyI from Georgia Tech -- see http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~dovrolis/) and Prof. Mihalis Nicolaou (see http://mihalisan.cyi.ac.cy/).

This position offers a unique opportunity for fundamental research and its exact focus will be determined also based the interests and skills of the successful candidate. Furthermore, the candidate will have the opportunity to link his/her work with ML applications of critical societal impact, favored by the interdisciplinary setting of the Institute.  The successful candidate will also work closely with the PIs in writing relevant grant proposals.

The appointment is for a period of 2 years, with the option of renewal subject to performance and the availability of funds.  An internationally competitive remuneration package will be offered, which is commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

Responsibilities/activities to be involved in:

  *   Conducting analytical and experimental research in machine/deep learning algorithms and frameworks
  *   Writing research papers in collaboration with the PIs, aiming to publish at top-tier conferences and journals
  *   Writing relevant grant proposals in collaboration with the PIs
  *   Dissemination of results at scientific conferences, workshops, and seminars
  *   Assisting in the supervision of graduate students
  *   Contribution to relevant Research Center activities at CaSToRC of CyI

Required Qualifications

  *   A Ph.D. degree in one of the following: computer science, electrical and computer engineering, applied math, statistics, or a degree in a similar area.
  *   At least 3 publications in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and/or Machine Learning.
  *   Strong programming skills (preferably in Python), and experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch.
  *   Ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team while showing initiative and independence.
  *   Excellent knowledge of the English language (written and verbal).
  *   High level of organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  *   Strong presentation skills.
  *   High level of communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications (not mandatory)

  *   Publications at top-tier peer-reviewed conferences such as ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR, etc, will be considered a very strong qualification.
