Department of Computing, Goldsmiths – University of London

Spring Term - to teach Cortical Modelling module

Part time hours equivalent to 0.05 FTE, Salary GR7, SP32 pro-rata or £25.67 per hour.

CORTICAL MODELLING

This module provides a theoretical and practical introduction to computational neuroscience. As a core component of the MSc in Computational Cognitive Neuroscience (see also https://www.gold.ac.uk/pg/msc-computational-cognitive-neuroscience/), it covers the “lower-level” aspects of brain modelling, focussing on single neurons and simple cortical circuits, including (but not limited to): neurobiology of the neuron (basic synaptic mechanisms, channel conductance, membrane potential), generation and propagation of action potential (Hodgkin-Huxley, compartmental models), leaky integrate-and-fire (LIF) neurons, random and feed-forward networks, competitive (Kohonen) and point-attractor networks. The course is delivered by means of ten lectures along with ten practical sessions (labs / workshops), each two hours long. The practical sessions typically involve implementing models of single neurons and small networks of neurons using MATLAB.

Students who successfully complete this module should be able to: (i) demonstrate knowledge and understanding of fundamental concepts of computational neuroscience; (ii) explain the main physical characteristics of biological neurons (synaptic mechanisms and membrane potential, action potential generation and propagation) and how they can be modelled; (iii) Implement simple (one or two compartments) models of LIF neurons; (iv) build computational models of small cortical circuits as simple networks of learning neurons.

To apply, please send a CV and covering letter to Catherine Edlin Bellamy, c.bellamy at gold.ac.uk and Dr. Max Garagnani, m.garagnani at gold.ac.uk
