Connectionists: Postdoctoral Position in Human Visual Processing and Deep Learning, Vanderbilt University

Tong, Frank frank.tong at Vanderbilt.Edu
Wed Feb 3 14:08:15 EST 2021

Dr. Frank Tong’s lab at Vanderbilt University seeks to hire a postdoctoral fellow who is interested in developing deep neural network models of human visual processing and assessing their ability to account for human behavioral and neural performance.

The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to pursue research in one or more focus areas of the lab. The first focuses on characterizing the behavioral and neural bases of visual object recognition, with an emphasis on developing and evaluating new deep neural network architectures as potential models of robust nature of human object recognition. The second focus is to conduct high-resolution fMRI studies at 7 Tesla to characterize the perceptual and attentional functions of the early human visual system, including the lateral geniculate nucleus and early visual cortex. The goal of this research is to evaluate and to develop models of feedback processing, including models of attentional selection and predictive coding. The third focus area is on understanding the visual and cognitive bases of radiological expertise in medical image perception, through a combination of behavioral experimentation with radiologists and non-experts, image processing, synthesis and analysis, and computational modeling to characterize and predict expert performance. Deep learning approaches to medical image classification will also be explored.

Candidates should have a strong research background in vision, neuroscience, and/or advanced computational methods, including machine learning and deep learning. Candidates should be highly fluent and versatile at coding in Python and/or MATLAB. Those with extensive experience in computational modeling and/or deep learning are especially encouraged to apply. We seek individuals who enjoy working on challenging problems with enthusiasm and creative rigor in a collaborative team-based environment. This position is open to both US citizens and foreign nationals. Start date is flexible.
