We now invite applications for the following two PhD
studentships within our department.

PhD Studentship "Adaptive and Autonomous Image
Understanding Systems"

Deadline for Application: 20th November, 2000

The project will explore intelligent algorithms for
adaptive image understanding including context based
reasoning. Generic methodology will be developed based on
image processing and pattern recognition methods to allow
automatic processing of scene analysis data using video
sequences. The goal of the project is to develop a seamless
system that continuously evolves in real-time with video
images.

PhD Studentship "Ultrasound based object recognition and
integration with image analysis"

Deadline for Application: 20th November, 2000

Only recently it has been demonstrated that ultrasound can
be used to detect objects in controlled environments. It
has been used for face recognition and obstacle avoidance.
In this project we develop techniques for ultrasound based
object recognition and couple this ability with image
processing on a mobile platform (robot). The ultrasound
method will provide the low resolution cheaper method as a
front end triggering the image processing component for
more detailed analysis. The research will be tested on
indoor and outdoor environment.

For both studentships, it is expected that prospective
applicants have good mathematical and analytical
background, with programming experience in C/C++ and
Unix/Linux operating systems. Applicants need not
necessarily have prior knowledge in these areas but should
have at least an upper second class first degree and where
possible a good Masters degree in computer science.

The studentships cover UK/EU fees and maintenance
(currently £6,620 pa) for up to three years. The successful
candidates should expect to take up the studentship no
later than 1 December, 2000 or as soon as possible when
negotiated with the department.
