NEUROSCIENCE POST-DOCTORAL POSITION AVAILABLE
George Mason University
A post-doctoral position is available beginning in September to work on a
project funded by the National Science Foundation. The goal of the project
is to completely characterize the differences between Hermissenda type A and
type B photoreceptors by measuring the light-induced currents and developing
computational models.
All highly motivated candidates with a recent PhD (or expecting one in the
year 2000) in physiology, neuroscience, or a related discipline are
encouraged to apply. Electrophysiology skills are essential, as well as the
ability and willingness to learn new techniques and concepts. Programming
skills and/or experience with modeling packages are desirable but not
necessary. The position is ideal for an experimentalist who would like to
learn mathematical and computational neuroscience techniques.
The post-doc will join the multidisciplinary Invertebrate Neurobiology
Laboratory at the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study, and the new School of
Computational Sciences of George Mason University, both of which are located
in Fairfax, VA (less than 20 miles west of Washington DC). Members of the
INL are interested in the biophysical and biochemical mechanisms of long term
memory storage. In particular, we seek to understand the cellular events
underlying the requirement for temporal proximity of stimu li to be
associated, and the neural circuits involved in the behavioral expression of
memory. The PI has developed software for modeling the biochemical reactions
of second messenger dynamics, and the effects of second messengers on channel
properties.

The post-doc will be hired as an assistant research professor with a salary
based on the NIH postdoctoral scale (with VA state employee benefits), and
will have full access to library, laboratory and computing facilities
both within the Krasnow Institute and George Mason University.
Application review will begin in August and continue until a suitable
candidate is found. Send CV, (p)reprints, a brief description of your
motivation, and names, email addresses and phone/fax numbers of three
