Two previous neural network simulations of categorical perception (CP)
have been replicated. The results have been subjected to more
rigorous analysis. The findings still support the claim that
backpropagation networks exhibit CP effects, but this is weakened as to
incorporate the crucial role of the way auto-association training
influences the organization of hidden unit representations. However,
this appears to be more in accordance with CP effects in human subjects.
