Call for Participation. (apologies if you receive this more than once)
1st European Workshop on Neuromorphic Systems (EWNS1)
29-31 August 1997.
University of Stirling, Stirling, Scotland.
www page: http://www.cs.stir.ac.uk/~lss/Neuromorphic/Info1.html
Organisers:
Dept of Computing Science, University of Stirling
Dept of Electrical Engineering, University of Edinburgh
Neuromorphic systems are implementations in silicon of sensory and neural
systems whose architecture and design are based on neurobiology. This growing
area proffers exciting possibilities such as sensory systems which can
compete with human senses and pattern recognition systems that can run in
real-time. The area is at the intersection of many disciplines:
neurophysiology, computer science and electrical engineering.
The purpose of this meeting is to bring together active researchers who can
discuss the problems of this developing technology. The meeting is intended to
bring together researchers who might not normally meet, for example, engineers
who want to implement systems based on neurobiology, and neurobiologists who
want to produce engineering implementations of systems.
The University is set on one of the most beautiful campusses in Europe, and is
centrally located in Scotland. It is easily reached by plane (to Glasgow or
Edinburgh, both 1 hour away) train, bus, or car.
We are grateful to the Gatsby Foundation for their generous support of
this workshop.
Meeting format:
The meeting will be a single-track meeting so that all attendees can go to all
the meetings. Accepted papers will be presented (presentations of about 30
minutes plus time for discussion), and there will be paper sessions and time
for discussion each day.
Programme
The invited speakers are:
Professor Rodney Douglas, Institute of Neuroinformatics, ETHZ, University of
Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland.
Professor Ralph Etienne-Cummings, Dept of Electrical Engineering, Southern
IIlinois University, USA.
The provisional programme is to be found at http://www.cs.stir.ac.uk/~lss/Neuromorphic/ProvProg.html
May I extend my thanks to all who submitted papers.
Book of the Conference:
We have now agreed with World Scientific to produce a book from the conference.
We plan to ask speakers to produce camera-ready copy soon after the meeting. The provisional title for the book is <i> Neuromorphic Systems: Engineering
Silicon from Neurobiology</i>.

Leslie S. Smith, Department of Computing Science and Mathematics, University of
Stirling.
Alister Hamilton, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of
Edinburgh.
