Title: Analysis of Brain Imaging Data

Organizers: Scott Makeig and Terrence Sejnowski
scott at salk.edu terry at salk.edu
Abstract:

The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers who
are interested in new techniques for analyzing brain recordings
based on electroencephalography (EEG), event-related potentials (ERP),
magnetoencephalography (MEG), optical recordings from cortex
using voltage-sensitive dyes, functional magnetic resonance
imaging (fMRI) and positron emission tomography (PET).
This is a rapidly developing area of cognitive neuroscience and
some new unsupervised learning techniques such as independent
component analysis (ICA) are proving useful for analyzing
data from humans and other primates. Both signal
processing experts and neuroscientists will participate in
this workshop. In addition to those who are interested in analysis
of brain data, those interested in interfacing on-line recordings
with practical devices are also welcome to participate.

Format:

The workshop will meet for 3 hours in the morning and 3 hours in
the late afternoon on December 5. The sessions will include short
(15 min) presentations by invited participants to help focus
discussion. Participants from the signal processing and neuroscience
communities are encouraged to attend and to actively participate
in the discussion, contribute brief (5 min) presentations,
and bring posters to the sessions.

Invited Participants:

Erkki Oja - Finland - Analysis of EEG Data using ICA
Martin McKeown - Salk Institute - fMRI analysis using ICA
Partha Mitra - Caltech - fMRI analysis using tapered spectral analysis
Ehud Kaplan - PCA analysis of optical recordings
Klaus Obermayer - Berlin, Germany - ICA analysis of optical recordings
   from visual cortex
Karl Friston, Queens Square, London - Analysis of PET and fMRI data
Henri Begleiter and David Chorlian (SUNY Health Center, NY) - ERP analysis

Others who have expressed an interest in attending include:

Brad Duckrow - Univ. Connecticut
Alex Dimitrov - Univ. Chicago
Andrew Oliver - UC London
Klaus Prank - Hannover, Germany
