DYNAMICAL MODELING IN BIOTECHNOLOGY
Commission of the European Communities, Directorate General for Science,
Research and Development.
Biotechnology Programme
Advanced workshops in Biotechnology
May 27 to June 8 1996
Institute for Scientific Interchange (ISI), Villa Gualino, Torino, Italy
Description: An intensive course for biologists at end-graduate and
postgraduate level on concepts and methods of biological modeling.
The course will include a 3 days computing alphabetization prelude,
a series of lectures and 6 modeling projects carried out under the
supervision of specialized tutors.
Topics: Discrete models for simulating biological systems (P. Seiden, IBM New
York), Qualitative theory and simulation of dynamical systems (A. Pikovsky,
MPI, Potsdam), Monte-Carlo simulation of ageing (D. Stauffer,Koeln), Non linear
excitations and energy localisation (M. Peyrard, ENS, Lyon), Neural Networks
(J.-P. Nadal, ENS, Paris), Self organization and pattern formation in
biochemical systems (R. Kapral, Toronto).
Projects: Gene expression, DNA/RNA sequence analysis and design, Cellular
automata and immune system, Non linear time-series analysis, Bacterial
evolution, Models of ecosystems.
Application: Although mainly aimed at biologists (both from industrial and
academic research) the course is also open to physicists, chemists, applied
mathematicians and computer scientists from EU countries with interdisciplinary
interests. Housing is provided at Villa Gualino. Submit your CV,
a one page description of your interests and how you think the course will
facilitate long term research/work goals and a recommendation letter.
Use e-mail if you can. No fees.
Participants will be selected by the services of the Commission and the
organisers.
Some budget is reserved to support living expenses for students,
expecially from unfavoured European countries.
