I'm not thrilled with the "reading fee" either, but $35 plus early
member registration @ $170 is pretty low for a conference these days;
certainly far less than the maximum registration fee of $480 that
Jordan Pollack mentioned.
As far as "sorting papers by fame" goes, for those of us who are not
famous, it is a good thing that there are conferences where papers
are merely "sorted by fame", when there are also elitist conferences
where fame is more likely a requirement for acceptance. (Did anyone
read NIPS into that sentence?) A conference is remembered for the quality
of presented papers, not for the quality of rejected papers.
