connectionist map-building

Does anyone know the whereabouts of Martin Snaith of the Information
Techonology group?  He appeared on a BBC equinox program recently describing
a mobile robot that navigates using a connectionist map. 

I would also be interested in hearing from anyone else who is using networks
to generate maps for robot navigation.
