Rejection not misclassification

Dear Net,

I have just been talking with my PhD supervisor and he has pointed out the
value of a neural net classifier which will reject patterns that are "too
different" from the exemplars used to train the net.

For example, if a neural net is being used to classify substances as being
toxic or non-toxic then it is much more desirable for the net to reject a
poorly recognized sample rather than possibly classify it incorrectly.

Seized by a frenzy of motivation, I have decided that the international neural
net research community might be able to point out some references on the
rejection of poor pattern matches.

Naturally, I will compile a list of all the references I receive and send it
out to all subscribers of this mailgroup.

Thanks in advance,
