On a related note, I described in a 1988 tech report how asymmetric
lateral connections in a self-organizing neural network can symmetrize
by using an inhibitory learning rule. The paper is called "Self-
Organizing Neural Networks for Perception of Visual Motion," by
J.A.Marshall. A more concise version will appear in the next issue of
Neural Networks (January 1990). To obtain the TR, you can write to
the Dept. Secretary, Boston Univ. Computer Science Dept., 111
Cummington St., Boston, MA 02215, U.S.A., [pam at cs.bu.edu], and ask for
CS-TR-88-010; the price is $7.00.
