[Research] January Upgrade of Compute Machine's Operating Systems

Hi Everyone, Happy New Year!

Within the next month we plan to have the LOP, LOQ, LOR, and LOS compute 
machines upgraded to CentOS 4.2 x86_64.  This provides the same levels 
of performance and memory addressing as the old Gentoo setup did, and 
adds enhanced maintainability.

Or current Gentoo profile is set to expire early in February, so now is 
the time to get everything upgraded.

We are already running CentOS 4 x86_64 on Lop2 and Loq3.  If you want to 
familiarize yourself, you can use these machines.

If anyone has reason to believe that we need to keep the legacy Gentoo 
setup installed anywhere, or if you have any other concerns or questions 
about the upgrade, please feel free to IM/ EMail/ or Call.
