The Advances in Cognitive Systems conference is going on in person in DC
and in Zoom this weekend. I suggest you check it out. I’ve been, and the
work is interesting and the discussion helpful.
I would note that I have heard that ICCM will be in the Netherlands,
co-located with MathPsych in Summer 2023. Dates will allow travel to
Australia and Cogsci.
The bonus is advice from a well-regarded epidemiologist on how to travel
this winter with COVID-19, RSV, and influenza out and about. I know long
COVID sufferers, and had a colleague go down for two weeks with RSV,
which I had not heard about until this year. So, please stay sensibly
safe out there. I remain a user of an AraNet 4 CO2 monitor, which tells
me how well ventilated a space is. Like a thermometer, but for ventilation.

We have not hosted a conference in the Asia Pacific region since 2012,
and we look forward to welcoming local scientists to Sydney next year.
We are also excited to share news about the commitments we are making to
support and ensure students and families in other regions are able to
join us for an incredible conference and destination experience in the
fabulous vibrant city of Sydney.(Virtual options for speakers to present
are still being finalized along with virtual interaction for conference
content).
Here’s what we are doing to support travel and attendance at COGSCI 2023:

pleased to announce the call for 2022 Victor Lesser Distinguished
Dissertation Award.
This award is named after Professor Victor Lesser, a long-standing
member of the AAMAS community who has supervised a large number of
outstanding PhD students in the area. It is awarded for dissertations
written as part of a PhD defended in the specified period, nominated by
the supervisor (with supporting references), which show originality,
significance and impact, and are supported by high quality publications.
Nominations are invited for the award which is sponsored by IFAAMAS and
will be presented at AAMAS-2023.
Eligible doctoral dissertations are those defended between 1 Nov 21 and
1 Oct 2022 in the area of Autonomous Agents or Multiagent Systems.
This award includes a certificate and a 1500 EUR payment.
Important Dates
Submission deadline: 15 Oct 22
Selection procedure:
The selection of the dissertation will be based on the originality,
significance, and impact of the work. Evidence of such impact include
publications at highly selective conferences and journals in the field,
with due importance given to the AAMAS conference series and JAAMAS.
Research output that resulted primarily from the student’s initiative
will be considered more favourably.
The selection committee will be the final arbiter in the decision
process. The selection committee might also decide to consult external
assessors and reserves the right to not award the prize if the
nominations do not meet the expected quality level.
The dissertation must be nominated by the thesis supervisor and must be
supported by the following documents, all should be delivered via the
link below by 15 Oct 22:
* A link to a PDF file of the dissertation. If the dissertation is not
written in English, the nomination must include an accessible link
to a substantial manuscript in English, with the nominee as the
first author, published in a peer-reviewed journal or conference.
* A PDF that contains a list of publications that have arisen from the
dissertation, with links to the published papers.
* A recommendation from the dissertation supervisor, on departmental
letterhead, nominating the dissertation for the
IFAAMAS-22VictorLesser Distinguished Dissertation Award. The
recommendation should explain the contribution of the dissertation
to the field of autonomous agents and multiagent systems, argue the
merit and possible future impact of the work, and highlight, where
relevant, how the work resulted from the initiative of the student.
Finally, this document should certify the eligibility of the PhD by
asserting that the PhD was defended successfully between 1 Nov 21
and 1 Oct 2022.
* The names, email addresses, and affiliations of at least one and at
most three referees, familiar with the research of the candidate and
experts in the pertinent research area, who will directly email
their recommendations for the candidate to the chair of the
selection committee (Paolo Turrini, p.turrini at warwick.ac.uk). A
reference letter should be no more than 500 words in length and
should be on official letterhead, signed and emailed as a PDF file.
Note: it is the responsibility of the dissertation supervisor to
contact the referees and ensure that letters (max 500 words, signed, and
on letterhead) are submitted by the deadline.
Though the nomination is to be submitted by the nominee’s dissertation
supervisor, it is required that the nominee has consented that the
dissertation be considered for this award and, if selected for the
award, commits to attend the AAMAS-2023 conference, where they will
receive the award and will give a presentation in a special session of
the conference on the work contained in the dissertation. The cost of
attending the conference is not covered by the award.

4) White House petition for immediate free access to federally funded

We have written this letter in reply to their recent memorandum
guaranteeing immediate free access to federally funded research. We
think it's important to ensure equitable participation in publishing in
addition to equitable access to scientific output. We also think it's
important for the whole world to send a message to the US government
here, because as we know where the US goes, we all tend to follow and
their decisions will have ripple effects everywhere else.
As you can see the letter already has 350 signatures, including
representatives of funding bodies (Gates Foundation, Wellcome Trust,
Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative), library directors, open access journal
editors (editor in chief of eLife, CEO of PLOS), as well as prominent
scientists such as Tim Behrens and Yann LeCun. What we need to do now is
to get many, many more people to sign, so if you could share with your
networks that would be a huge help as well.

[I have bought fonts from Matthew Butterick <mb at mbtype.com>, for our
zoom timer videos (acs.ist.psu.edu/timers). He is a typographer, former
lawyer, and website tool/publication tool developer. I am on his newsletter
(available from his web site) that is entertaining and educational. This
seems like a timely topic given that my university is allowing similar
type of behavior unannounced or at least unannounced to me. ]
About two weeks ago I told you that I had teamed up with the amazingly
excellent class-action litigators Joseph Saveri, Cadio Zirpoli, and
Travis Manfredi at the Joseph Saveri Law Firm to investigate GitHub
Copilot.
Today, we’ve filed a class-action lawsuit in US federal court in San
Francisco, CA on behalf of a proposed class of possibly millions of
GitHub users. We are challenging the legality of GitHub Copilot (and
a related product, OpenAI Codex, which powers Copilot). The suit has
been filed against a set of defendants that includes GitHub, Microsoft
(owner of GitHub), and OpenAI.
The initial complaint is available here:
https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgithubcopilotlitigation.com%2F&data=05%7C01%7Ciccm-l%40lists.psu.edu%7Cbdcfa3bc63924763dac408dac8dc1b27%7C7cf48d453ddb4389a9c1c115526eb52e%7C0%7C0%7C638043144912758351%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=s9abhIKbSAnPNeZdfGwuJt16fW7CLn9459lxV6SDO%2Bo%3D&reserved=0
This is the first step in what will be a long journey. As far as we
know, this is the first class-action case in the US challenging the
training and output of AI systems. It will not be the last. AI
systems are not exempt from the law. Those who create and operate
these systems must remain accountable. If companies like Microsoft,
GitHub, and OpenAI choose to disregard the law, they should not expect
that we the public will sit still. AI needs to be fair & ethical for
everyone. If it’s not, then it can never achieve its vaunted aims of
elevating humanity. It will just become another way for the
privileged few to profit from the work of the many.
We plan to update the website regularly during the litigation.
Those who like Twitter can also follow @copilotcase.

14) Open-Rank Tenure-Track Faculty in HCI at PSU, due 28 Nov
The College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST)
http://ist.psu.edu/ at PSU invites
applications for an Open-Rank, Tenure-Line Faculty
position in HCI beginning in Fall 2023.
For this search, we seek exceptional candidates with high-quality
research and publications to strengthen and complement our current
research programs. We particularly seek scholars who transformatively
enhance objectives and approaches to social justice through the design
of digital tools and infrastructures. We are interested in actionable
approaches that strengthen social justice processes and outcomes through
design research, and show how social justice processes and outcomes can
expand from remediation of past and present social injustice to an
inclusive and equitable re-envisioning of human possibilities. Specific
design approaches may include but are not limited to VR/AR/XR,
visualization, tangible interface, fabrication, human-AI interaction,
assistive technology, sustainable computing technology, and
sociotechnical system design. Specific examples are the design of
digital tools and infrastructures to support greater dignity in work
activity, that show how the enhancement of human dignity can be a design
outcome, or how design can help move society from social economies of
self-sufficiency, dyadic reciprocity, and autonomy to social economies
of co-production, generalized reciprocity, and generalized
responsibility. Candidates will be expected to teach undergraduate and
graduate courses including residential, online, or hybrid courses.
Competitive applicants for the rank of Asst Prof will possess
a PhD in IST or related fields before
beginning employment at Penn State, a strong potential for developing an
externally funded, collaborative, interdisciplinary research program,
and the potential to contribute to the college’s teaching mission.
