UNIVERSITY OF EXETER: DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY

LECTURESHIP IN PSYCHOLOGY

Applications are invited for a permanent lectureship which will be
available from 1st October 1997, though a later start date (January or
April 1998) can be arranged, as the result of the early retirement of
Dr Robert Brown.

The department is seeking people with strong records or great potential
who will strengthen our existing research group in cognitive psychology.
We are particularly keen that new lecturers should engage in
collaborative research with existing staff and develop links between
separate areas.
Preference will be given to those whose interests are in one or more of:
(a) language, particularly including psycholinguistics, cognitive
neuropsychology or developmental approaches.
(b) neural network modelling (connectionism), particularly its
application to cognitive development, language or vision
(c) animal cognition

The department has a high reputation for its research, having obtained
ratings of 5, 4 and 4 in the last three research assessment exercises,
and has a good position within the University, having been recently
recommended for School status and singled out as a growth area.
The research of the department is organised in three research groups:
Cognitive Psychology and Cognitive Science; Social and Economic Psychology;
Health and Clinical Psychology. Further details of the Cognitive
Psychology and Cognitive Science research group's activities can be found at:
http://www.exeter.ac.uk/~nejones/pg/cogpage.htm

Teaching duties for the new lecturer will be arranged by the Head of
Department and will obviously depend upon the interests of those
appointed. It should be noted that in the first two years the new
lecturer will have a substantially lighter-than-average teaching and
administrative load.

The Department enjoys excellent accommodation in an exceptionally
attractive location, with a full range of technical facilities and
support, including a first-rate audio-visual studio, a recently
refurbished animal laboratory and state-of-the-art computing facilities
for teaching and research. These include a suite of Macintoshes
for undergraduate use, a dedicated suite of Macs and PCs for
postgraduate use and a new connectionist/computational modelling
laboratory consisting of Unix workstations. The University's 'mainframe'
provision is Unix based. All staff have a PC for their own use and the
new appointee will be given an allocation to buy new journals and books
and an initial equipment budget in order to establish a firm base
for their research. In addition to external and University research
grants, the Department operates its own internal scheme to offer small
'pump-priming' support for new research initiatives.
Further details about the department can be found at our world wide web site

Informal enquiries (and visits) are encouraged and potential applicants
should contact
Dr Paul Webley, Head of Department, Department of Psychology, University
of Exeter, Exeter EX4 4QG. Telephone 01392 264600 or email
P.Webley at exeter.ac.uk

Further information and application forms are available from Personnel,
University of Exeter, Exeter EX4 4QJ, 01392-263100 (answer phone) or
email Personnel at exeter.ac.uk, quoting ref. no. 4147. The closing date is
Friday 29th August 1997 and it is hoped to carry out interviews
during the week beginning September 22nd.

The salary will be on the Lecturer A scale, 16,045 - 21,016 pounds p.a.
