Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Neural Network Modelling of Brain Processes

Centre for Neural and Adaptive Systems
(http://www.tech.plym.ac.uk/soc/research/neural/ index.html)

School of Computing
University of Plymouth, UK

The Centre for Neural and Adaptive Systems investigates computational neural
models of major brain processes underlying intelligent behaviour and uses
these models to provide inspiration for the development of novel neural
computing architectures and systems for intelligent sensory information
processing, condition monitoring, autonomous control and robotics. The
Centre carries out collaborative research with leading international experts
in the UK, USA and Europe, in both the fields of computational neuroscience
and neural computation.

A Research Fellow is sought by the Centre to participate in its on-going
research programme in the area of neural network modelling of major brain
processes, in collaboration with existing researchers in the Centre. Current
work in the Centre is concerned with the investigation and development of
neural network models of a number of brain regions and their interactions,
including the hippocampus, septum, basal ganglia, prefrontal cortex,
thalamus and sensory cortex. Specific investigations include learning and
memory in spatial navigation tasks, streaming and grouping in auditory
perception, and attentional set shifting in visual discrimination tasks.

Over the next few years we wish to develop our links more strongly with
leading experimental neuroscientists in the field in the UK, USA and Europe,
and the Research Fellow will be expected to contribute mainly to this
objective. He/she will be eligible, and encouraged, to apply for UK Research
Council and other grants to support his/her research, and to take on
research student supervision.

Candidates for the Fellowship will be expected to hold, or be about to
receive, a PhD degree either in the neural network modelling of brain
processes, or in experimental neuroscience. If the latter, then he/she must
have a strong interest in neural modelling. Candidates should also have or
expect to achieve within two years, significant journal or conference
publications in their area. A good knowledge of fundamental neuroscience
principles is necessary, and candidates must either have good computational
modelling skills (we currently use Matlab and C/C++). or be willing to
acquire these skills.

In addition to carrying out his/her research programme, the Research Fellow
will be expected to undertake some teaching duties on the MSc Computational
Intelligence programme to which the Centre makes a major contribution.

The salary for the post will be in the range of #18,724 to #22,471 per annum.
