This year's Soar workshop will be during the week of 12-16 Jun in
Ann Arbor at the U of Michigan (Dow 1010 on North Campus). This
will be in person, although we will try to support remote participation.

The tentative schedule is:
   12-13 Jun: Beginner tutorial
   14-15 Jun noon: Workshop talks
15 Jun noon – 16 Jun: Advanced tutorials

By splitting the tutorials on each side of the workshop, the thought is
that beginners can attend M-Th noon and advanced users can attend W-F.
The actual length of the Workshop (W-Th) will depend on the number of
talks people sign up for.

For the advanced tutorials, we are planning to have short-to-medium
modules on specific topics that go beyond what is covered in the
beginning tutorial. Examples could include deep dives into chunking,
episodic memory, semantic memory, SVS, SML (interfacing to other
systems), VisualSoar, performance tuning your Soar agent, ...  If you
have a request for a specific topic, please let me know.

A call for registration and talks will go out in late Apr. As always,
there will be no registration fee.

Hope to see you in June!

John Laird

The Centre for Theoretical Neuroscience at the U of Waterloo is
excited to announce our 8th annual Nengo summer school on large-scale
brain modelling and neuromorphic computing. This two-week school will
teach participants to use the Nengo simulation package to build
state-of-the-art cognitive and neural models to run both in simulation
and on neuromorphic hardware. Summer school participants will be given
on-site access to neuromorphic hardware and will learn to run high-level
applications using Nengo! More generally, Nengo provides users with a
versatile and powerful environment for designing cognitive and neural
systems and has been used to build what is currently the world's largest
functional brain model, Spaun, which includes spiking deep learning,
reinforcement learning, adaptive motor control, and cognitive control
networks.

For a look at the last in-person summer school, check out this short
video: https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D5w0BzvNOypc%26feature%3Dyoutu.be&data=05%7C01%7Ciccm-l%40lists.psu.edu%7C0ef5cbc5a1a0433bc25008db2edf3633%7C7cf48d453ddb4389a9c1c115526eb52e%7C0%7C0%7C638155308437341703%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=F%2FYUC7cXtzgnJVqEAmOhaY5MLyD%2FdpFh5JTCZboimes%3D&reserved=0

We welcome applications from all interested graduate students, postdocs,
professors, and industry professionals with a relevant background.

Format: A combination of tutorials and project-based work. Participants
are encouraged to bring their own ideas for projects, which may focus on
testing hypotheses, modeling neural or cognitive data, implementing
specific behavioural functions with neurons, expanding past models, or
providing a proof-of-concept of various neural mechanisms. Hands-on
tutorials, work on individual or group projects, and talks from invited
faculty members will make up the bulk of day-to-day activities. A
project demonstration event will be held on the last day of the school,
with prizes for strong projects!

Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to:

* interface Nengo with various kinds of neuromorphic hardware (e.g.
Loihi 1, SpiNNaker)
* build perceptual, motor, and sophisticated cognitive models using
spiking neurons
* model anatomical, electrophysiological, cognitive, and behavioural data
* use a variety of single cell models within a large-scale model
* integrate machine learning methods into biologically oriented models
* interface Nengo with cameras and robotic systems
* implement modern nonlinear control methods in neural models
* and much more?

Date and Location: 4 Jun to 16 Jun 23 at the U of
Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

This show is streaming, Lucky Hank, on AMC.

The first episode, 45 min., is up on youtube as a teaser.

It makes me laugh. It is based on the novel Straight man by Richard
Russo, written while he was at Penn State/Altoona.
