Abstract submission deadline: 18 October 2026 Workshop proposal submission is now open. Workshop proposal submission deadline: 01 November 2026 UNDERGRADUATE travel grant applications are now open. UNDERGRADUATE travel grant submission deadline: 30 October 2026 ---------------------------------------------------- COSYNE MEETING & WORKSHOPS ---------------------------------------------------- The annual Cosyne meeting provides an inclusive forum for the exchange of empirical and theoretical approaches to problems in systems neuroscience, in order to understand how neural systems function. The MAIN MEETING is single-track. A set of invited talks is selected by the Executive Committee, and additional talks and posters are selected by the Program Committee, based on submitted abstracts. The WORKSHOPS feature in-depth discussion of current topics of interest, in a small group setting. Cosyne topics include but are not limited to: neural basis of behavior, sensory and motor systems, circuitry, learning, neural coding, natural scene statistics, dendritic computation, neural basis of persistent activity, nonlinear receptive field mapping, representations of time and sequence, reward systems, decision-making, synaptic plasticity, map formation and plasticity, population coding, attention, neuromodulation, and computation with spiking networks. We would like to foster increased participation from experimental groups as well as computational ones. Please circulate widely and encourage your students and postdocs to apply. When preparing an abstract, authors should be aware that not all abstracts can be accepted for the meeting. Abstracts will be selected based on the clarity with which they convey the substance, significance, and originality of the work to be presented. ----------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS ----------------------------------------------------- A series of workshops will be held after the main Cosyne meeting. The goal is to provide an informal forum for the discussion of important research questions and challenges. Controversial issues, open problems, comparisons of competing approaches, and alternative viewpoints are encouraged. Workshop proposals deadline: 01 November 2026 ***To submit your Cosyne 2027 Workshop Proposal, please visit Cosyne.org -> Workshops -> Call for Proposals*** The overarching goal of all workshops should be the integration of empirical and theoretical approaches, in an environment that fosters collegial discussion and debate. - There will be 6-10 workshops/day, running in parallel. - Each workshop is expected to draw between 15 and 80 people. - The workshops will be split into morning and late afternoon sessions. - Workshops will be held in Montreal, Canada. - Workshop speakers do NOT receive free registration, travel expenses, or accommodation for either the main meeting or the workshop sessions. Organizers should let invited speakers know that they are expected to pay for workshop registration fees. Workshop organizer responsibilities include coordinating workshop participation and content, scheduling all speakers, submitting a final schedule for the workshop program, and moderating the discussion. Organizers can, but need not, be speakers. One complimentary (free) organizer registration is provided per workshop. For workshops with two organizers, the free registration can be given to one of the organizers or split evenly between them. Any required multimedia resources beyond a projector, screen, and microphones will be the responsibility of the workshop organizers to coordinate with Cosyne and the workshop venue A/V staff. EVALUATION CRITERIA As stated above, the goal of Cosyne workshops is to provide an interactive, informal forum for discussions. Relevant topics include, but are not limited to: sensory processing; motor planning and control; functional neural circuits; motivation, reward and decision making; learning and memory; adaptation and plasticity; neural coding; neural circuitry and network models; and methods in computational or systems neuroscience. Workshop proposals will be evaluated by the Cosyne Workshop Chairs, and a subset of the proposals will be selected. The proposals will be evaluated according to the following six metrics (which will be weighted equally): - Relevance to the Cosyne community - Integration of experimental and theoretical issues - Current interest in the topic in the scientific community - Potential for new research directions and interactions to emerge - Distinctive scope/approach compared to other workshops (including previous years?) - Diversity and equity in the proposed speaker (we are looking for representation of women or nonbinary individuals, individuals from other underrepresented groups, and a balance of established and early career researchers) In order to foster discussion within Workshops and reduce overlap between workshops, organizers should inform invited speakers that a speaker can take part in no more than two Workshops. WORKSHOP PROPOSAL Each workshop proposal will include: - Name(s) and email address(es) of the organizers (2 organizers per session is strongly recommended, but 3 will be allowed). - A title. - A brief description of 1. what the workshop will address and accomplish, 2. why the topic is of interest, 3. who is the targeted group of participants. - Names and email addresses of speakers, who should already have agreed to participate should the proposal be accepted. - Only proposals for one-day workshops will be accepted. The Workshop Chairs reserve the right to ask two workshops to merge into a two-day workshop, should topics align. - A brief resume of the workshop organizer(s) along with a short list of workshop-relevant publications (about half a page total). - A description of how you have addressed diversity and equity in your workshop. Experience has shown that the best discussions during a workshop are those that arise spontaneously. A good way to foster these is to have short talks and long question periods (e.g. 30+15 minutes), and to have plenty of breaks. We recommend keeping the number of talks small (i.e., fewer than 10 talks per day). WORKSHOP COSTS Detailed registration costs, etc, will be at www.cosyne.org. Please note: Cosyne does NOT provide travel funding for workshop speakers. Organizers should let invited speakers know that they are expected to pay for workshop registration fees. Participants are encouraged to register early, in order to qualify for discounted registration rates. One complimentary (free) organizer registration is provided per workshop. For workshops with two organizers, the free registration can be given to one of the organizers or split evenly between them. Delivered by Dr. Floriana Pichiorri Fondazione Santa Lucia IRCCS, Rome, Italy The webinar will take place over Zoom on Thursday, 15th October 2026, at 2 PM UK time RSVP: https://www.linkedin.com/events/7512723800900444160 Abstract: The first part of the talk will browse the current clinical use of neurophysiological techniques, namely, EEG and evoked potentials, EMG and nerve conduction studies. The brief overview will highlight the distance between the extremely basic technical requirements in the clinical field at the moment, and the advancements provided by research in the BCI and nearby fields. The core of the webinar will be represented by a chronological history of non-invasive BCIs to promote motor rehabilitation after neurological conditions (mainly stroke), as developed and currently employed at Fondazione Santa Lucia, tackling mainly paradigms and approaches. The third and last part of the talk will bring examples on how the advancements in signal processing of EEG/EMG data within the BCI research can be employed to measure neurorehabilitation outcome per se, expanding to nearby fields and bringing new insights on the neural mechanisms that underlie neurologic damage and subsequent recovery. Speaker Biography: Dr. Floriana Pichiorri is a medical doctor and neurologist with a PhD in neuroscience. Her main clinical activity is in the field of clinical neurophysiology, in a neurorehabilitation hospital with inpatient and outpatient services. She has been doing research in the BCI field since 2009, participating in several national and international projects (TOBI, BNCI Horizon 2020). The main focus of her research is EEG-based BCIs for clinical applications, mainly post-stroke rehabilitation, and neuroelectrical imaging as a potential biomarker for neurologic impairment and rehabilitation efficacy. The Essex BCI-NE Lab webinars series takes place monthly (usually, on the second or third Wednesday of the month) over Zoom and is open to all. Speakers are invited to talk about their research for 45-50 minutes followed by Q&A. Where speakers allow it, we record the talks and make them available to everyone on our YouTube channel. The successful candidate will work on developing physics-guided learning and operator-theoretic system identification methods for the detection and identification of inherently challenging anomalies in complex dynamical systems. The goal is threefold: 1. _Detect and identify sophisticated events (e.g., cyber-attacks) occurring during transient system conditions_: Enhance the reliability of anomaly detection, e.g., by properly distinguishing between naturally caused disturbances and adversarial actions. 2. _Improve domain generalization_: Efficient detection of previously unseen and unknown anomalies will be a first step towards higher-order cognition and reasoning, addressing the black-box nature and the brittleness of conventional detection schemes. 3. _Reduce the training data volume and computational overhead_: In stark contrast to conventional detection schemes, resource-efficient detection would alleviate the need for a considerable amount of training data to obtain effective outcomes. The developed learning methods may have direct applicability to anomaly/novelty detection problems in several verticals, including vehicular systems, industrial automation, environmental modeling, and robotics. No affiliation; I just checked the numbers. Saman Rahbar, "The Score Is Not the Structure: Brain Alignment and Cross-Lingual Transfer" (arXiv:2610.03827). Core result: training a language model to match human brain responses raises its brain-similarity score from 0.10 to 0.34, against a 0.54 ceiling. But a model trained on a target whose correspondence to the brain was destroyed still scores 0.31, and so do both a rank-128 permutation and rank-matched Gaussian noise. The part of the rise actually specific to the brain is 0.028 to 0.068. Second setting, same shape: cross-lingual probe transfer gives p = 0.0006 when the 272 language pairs are counted as independent, and p = 0.155 when the 17 languages are the unit, which is the correct unit. The line that stays with me: before asking whether a correspondence helps, ask how much of the score would survive without it. Relevant to anyone reporting RSA/CKA-style numbers. Simulation remains the workhorse of high-performance computing, but supercomputers are increasingly asked to host a second class of workload alongside it. Agentic AI systems (e.g., foundation models acting autonomously through iterative loops of reasoning and tool use) now issue tool calls that are themselves HPC tasks: simulations, solvers, and data-analysis pipelines. Serving them adds interactive, asynchronous and bursty demands to machines designed for bulk- synchronous batch jobs. The question this raises for our community is not one of replacement but of extension: how schedulers, runtimes, communication layers, I/O stacks and memory hierarchies should be extended so that agentic and other AI workloads can coexist with, and feed back into, traditional large-scale computation. ISPDC welcomes work on these new capabilities as much as continued advances in the classical foundations of parallel and distributed computing. We invite original research contributions to ISPDC 2027 in the following categories: full papers, short papers, posters, and talks. Topics of Interest Contributions are welcome in, but not limited to, the following areas: ? Algorithms and models for parallel and distributed computing ? Fortunately, for some time, advances in automatic algorithm configuration and design methods have made this a more "straightforward" process. In this talk, I will discuss some of the advances we have achieved over the past 25 years and highlight techniques of automatic configuration of algorithms, the automatic configuration of multi-objective algorithms, the automatic configuration for anytime algorithms, and the automatic design of SLS algorithms via the EMILI framework. Towards the end of the talk I will discuss some aspects of the large language models and how they have changed and will continue to change our perspective on automatic configuration and design of the algorithms. *Details* *?**Date: 13 October 2026* *?**Time*: *16:00-17:00 CEST (17:00-18:00 Greek time)* *?**Zoom link * *Meeting ID:? 975 2336 3413* *Passcode: 141540* ***?**For more information, click **here* *?Lecturer Short CV:***Thomas St?tzle is with the Belgian F.R.S.-FNRS (National Fund for Scientific Research) and works at the IRIDIA laboratory of the Universit? libre de Bruxelles (ULB), Belgium. Goldstein speaking in Developing Minds Lecture Series on October 15 Message-ID: <148A60AF-B8A0-4333-8692-1F209B74420A@fias.uni-frankfurt.de> Dear colleagues, On October 15, the Developing Minds global online lecture series is proud to host Michael H. Goldstein, Cornell University, USA, speaking on ?Mechanisms of socially guided vocal learning in human infants and songbirds: Connecting contingency to curiosity-driven learning?. His talk will take place at: 09:00 am EDT (Eastern Daylight Time, USA) 13:00 UTC (Universal Coordinated Time) 15:00 CEST (Central European Summer Time) 22:00 JST (Japan Standard Time) The talk will be hosted via zoom: https://uni-frankfurt.zoom-x.de/j/69608764770?pwd=gOHzVZ5y86Ic0MZFik6khLk0mF4FjO.1 Meeting-ID: 696 0876 4770 Code: 401171 Abstract: The ability to learn a vocal repertoire is a rare phenomenon, emerging in only a handful of groups, including humans and songbirds. A key parallel in the vocal development of certain songbirds and human babies is the social function of immature vocalizations. The form and timing of adult-infant interactions facilitate real-time vocal learning and have strong influences on the development of mature birdsong and language. Specifically, contingent responses of adults to the plastic song of birds and the babbling of babies have strong influences on learning. What makes contingency effective? We will examine curiosity-driven learning (CDL) as a framework for a mechanistic understanding of learning from contingent social interactions. In CDL, intrinsic reward is generated by changes in the predictability of social interactions as a function of immature vocal behavior. We will discuss several tests of this idea at the behavioral and neural levels in songbirds and human infants. Taken together, my studies indicate that temporal characteristics of social interaction are rewarding to young songbirds and human infants, and reward pathways may drive learning in social contexts. Short Bio: Michael Goldstein is a Professor of Psychology and a Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Fellow at Cornell University. He received his PhD in developmental psychology and animal behavior from Indiana University. Michael studies the development and evolution of vocal communication and social learning. He takes a comparative approach, investigating vocal communication and social development in human infants and songbirds. His research on the developmental processes by which knowledge of speech and song are acquired has revealed new mechanisms by which the social environment influences the learning of species-typical adaptive skills. By studying social interaction and learning as it occurs in moment-to-moment interactions between infants and social partners, Michael?s research connects our knowledge of social influences on developmental outcomes with specific processes of learning. A major finding from his work is that immature vocal behavior, such as babbling in humans and plastic song in songbirds, has crucial functional significance for learning, but only when studied in a social context. Michael received the David Kucharski Young Investigator Award from the International Society for Developmental Psychobiology and the Distinguished Early Career Contribution Award from the International Society on Infant Studies. His research has been supported by grants from NICHD and NSF. The talk will be recorded and made available for later viewing. While these changes have already had considerable impact on most areas of science they hold a particular resonance for neuroscience. Crucially, AI shares a common lineage with neuroscience and, fundamentally, machine learning and the brain employ similar computations to process and compress information. For these reasons AI provides a means to emulate neural functions and the circuits supporting them, providing insights to aid our understanding of the brain and cognition. Equally, AI tools provide a means to discover, segment, and track distinct neural and behavioural states, yielding more efficient experiments and accelerating the pace of discovery. In turn, this understanding feeds back into the design of more effective AI architectures and models. Essentially, AI problems posed in neuroscience both require and inspire further advances in AI. UCL NeuroAI has been set up to provide a forum where researchers in these areas can meet, exchange ideas, and move both fields forward. -- ----------------------------------------------------- Padraig Gleeson http://openneuroai.org Room 321, Anatomy Building Department of Neuroscience, Physiology & Pharmacology University College London Gower Street London WC1E 6BT United Kingdom +44 207 679 3214 p.gleeson at ucl.ac.uk ----------------------------------------------------- -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
