Dear colleagues, We are pleased to invite submissions to the upcoming Springer Nature Collection: Foundation Models on the Edge: Energy and Hardware Aware Strategies for Embedded Intelligence Participating journal: Discover Electronics (Open Access) Submission deadline: 25 November 2026 Collection link: https://link.springer.com/collections/jdeafifhga As Large Language Models (LLMs) and Visual Language Models (VLMs) move beyond cloud-only deployments, their execution on embedded and edge electronic platforms is becoming critical for low-latency, privacy-preserving, and autonomous systems — including UAVs, autonomous robots, vehicular platforms, and IoT-enabled critical infrastructures. This Collection focuses on the electronic, hardware, and energy-aware challenges of deploying foundation models under resource constraints. We welcome original research articles, reviews, and methods papers addressing topics such as: • Hardware accelerator design for transformer-based models (FPGA, ASIC, neuromorphic approaches) • Energy-efficient inference and power-aware scheduling on embedded SoCs • Hardware-aware quantization, pruning, distillation, and mixed-precision strategies • Systematic energy profiling and carbon footprint analysis across hardware platforms • Heterogeneous CPU–GPU–NPU orchestration and memory hierarchy optimization • Edge–cloud split inference and adaptive offloading strategies • Embedded LLM integration in UAVs, robotic controllers, and vehicular ECUs • Reliability, safety assurance, and thermal management for safety-critical systems • Electronic-level benchmarking and reproducible measurement frameworks • Sustainability and lifecycle-aware hardware design for foundation model deployment This Collection supports and amplifies research aligned with SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). 📌 Journal information – Discover Electronics • Fully Open Access • Median time to first decision: 13 days • 153.8k downloads (2025) Editors: • Dr. J. de Curtò (Universidad Pontificia Comillas / BSC-CNS) • Dr. Carlos T. Calafate (Universitat Politècnica de València) • Dr. I. de Zarzà (LUXEMBOURG Institute of Science and Technology) We particularly encourage submissions that combine empirical validation, hardware-level instrumentation, and reproducible evaluation methodologies , bridging the gap between foundation model theory and electronic system implementation. We would greatly appreciate if you could circulate this call within your research groups and networks. We look forward to your contributions.
