Dear all,

We're hiring a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Monash University in
Melbourne, Australia. Please see the text below.

The project is about understanding principles of learning in biological &
artificial neural networks. It is in collaboration with Anil Seth (Sussex),
Yoshua Bengio (Mila), and Blake Richards (McGill). We are looking for a
recent PhD graduate with experience in generative modelling, active
inference, reinforcement learning, and possibly of analysing
high-dimensional in-vitro neural recordings.

energetic and enthusiastic minds, driven to challenge what’s expected,
expand what we know, and learn from other inspiring, empowering thinkers.

The Opportunity

In this collaborative and multidisciplinary project, you will focus on
employing and extending active inference – a framework for defining how
neural networks self-optimise in highly dynamic and uncertain environments
– along with in vitro neural network recordings to understand the governing
principles of learning in biological and artificial neural networks. The
project is within a wider collaboration of Associate Professor Adeel Razi
with Professor Anil Seth (Sussex), Professor Blake Richards (McGill),
Professor Yoshua Bengio (Mila and The University of Montreal) and our
industrial partner.

To be successful in this role:

This position is suited to a highly motivated individual who holds a
doctoral qualification in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering, Machine
Learning, Applied Physics and Mathematics, Computational Neuroscience or a
closely related field.

You will have: demonstrated analytical and manuscript preparation skills;
including a track record of refereed research publications in computational
or mathematical modelling of natural systems, reinforcement learning,
active inference, computational neuroscience and relevant areas; the
ability to solve complex problems by using discretion, innovation and the
exercise diagnostic skills and/or expertise; and excellent planning and
organisational skills.

Monash benefits include:

   - Professional development and study support
   - Collaborative and inclusive culture
   - Health and well-being initiatives
   - Generous parental leave and on-site childcare
   - On-site services available to staff at our campuses including on-site
gym, pool, bookshop, health service, post office
