============================
Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Professor of Computer Science
specialising in computational, user-oriented data processing and discovery
The Vrije Universiteit Brussel
For more than 50 years, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel has stood for
freedom, equal opportunities and solidarity. We nurture a vibrant,
close-knit community on our four campuses, supporting a diverse
collection of personalities: pure-blood innovators, but, above all,
people who are free to be 100% themselves. With about 3,500 employees,
we are the largest Flemish-speaking employer in Brussels, an
international city with which we are only too happy to connect and
throughout which our campuses are dispersed.
Our work, in both teaching and research, is based on the principle of
free inquiry for the advancement of humanity. We reject any “mere
authority” argument and actively promote the free judgment that is
necessary for the social integration of this basic principle.
The VUB is autonomous and democratically managed. Thus, the University's
policy may be implemented and controlled, but the right of the
University Community to be part of that policy is actively upheld.
The University's mission includes:
• development, transmission and application of
high-quality academic teaching and research, free from any bias;
• the social integration of these efforts in a spirit of
social concern;
• to support the critical formation of everyone in the
context of the local and world community.
The Post
Research
We seek candidates, at all career stages, with strong academic research
expertise in one or more of the following disciplines in computational,
user-oriented data processing and discovery: exploratory search; complex
data exploration and analysis; machine learning for big data; and / or
interactive data processing. The VUB is an equal-opportunity employer,
and candidates will be selected strictly on merit. We particularly
encourage applications from women.
You will be able to demonstrate experience appropriate to your career
stage in the engineering of next-generation intelligent data analysis
systems. You will do so preferably through a broad portfolio of
contributions to both fundamental and more applied research, with a
funding record where appropriate.
You will be expected to help develop the research of the Department of
Computer Science (http://we.vub.ac.be/en/computer-science-department) by
initiating and conducting research in data-analysis that is related, but
complementary, to the research that is ongoing within the Department,
and in the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, of which you will be a
member. Current related research within the Department includes:
multi-agent systems, knowledge representation, emergent communication
and language, computational creativity and machine learning at the AI
Lab (ai.vub.ac.be); programming languages, frameworks and tools for
distributed data-intensive systems at the Software Language Lab; and
human-data interaction at the Web and Information Systems Lab.
Teaching
Your teaching assignment will include general undergraduate computer
science courses and specialized, research-related master's courses.
Teaching load in the Department is shared equitably among
teaching-active colleagues, according to full-time equivalence. Your
expected full-time equivalent teaching assignment will comprise four
courses of 6 ECTS credits per year, including a new speciality course
related to your research interests. Teaching assistants are provided for
all courses.
You will be expected to contribute actively to the development of our
new programme specialization, Data Management and Analytics, in the
Department’s 2-year Master Computer Science
(http://we.vub.ac.be/en/master-computer-science).
You will be expected to endorse and abide by the university's
educational vision (full text can be consulted on the university's website).
