The successful candidate will join the research group of Prof. Paul Verschure, at the Institute of Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC). The SPECS-lab<https://specs-lab.com/> is a dynamic multi-national, multi-cultural, and multi-disciplinary research environment with a long-standing track record in the study of mind and brain through theoretical, empirical, and synthetic methods. Analysis, modeling, and visualization of brain physiological data using the multi-scale network platform BrainX3, a novel computational neuroscience tool for diagnostics, prognostics, and intervention planning of neurological disorders.

As part of recent international initiatives, neuroscience has embarked on the ambitious challenge of simulating and analysing large-scale brain dynamics at various levels of biological complexity. The outcomes of this approach will contribute to clinical applications to treat several brain dysfunctions, but also have the potential of addressing fundamental questions of brain organization, including the substrate and function of human consciousness. The successful candidate will contribute to uncovering neural and behavioural mechanisms underlying brain dynamics in health and disease and their emulation in artificial behaving systems. This project aims to build a simulation of the damaged brain based on structural and functional connectivity networks using BrainX3 (http://www.brainx3.com/),<http://www.brainx3.com/> a computational tool for multi-level integrative in-silico modelling of brain networks. Using BrainX3, this project will target the localization and dynamics of brain lesions and the analyses of their impact on brain function. The BrainX3 platform is specifically designed to integrate multiple types of data and simulate network dynamics at multiple scales. This is particularly important for simulating detailed disease models and assessing the effects of various interventions.

The research will be developed within the framework of the EU project: Virtual Brain Cloud<https://virtualbraincloud-2020.eu/tvb-cloud-main.html>. The successful candidate will be supervised by Prof. Paul Verschure at IBEC, ICREA, Barcelona, in collaboration with Prof. Rodrigo Alberto Rocamora at the Epilepsy Unit, IMIM, Barcelona.

The successful candidate will conduct research using computational tools for multi-level integrative in-silico modeling of brain networks.

Tasks will include:

  *   Building models of brain plasticity, studying the effects of perturbations and patterns of disrupted information flow following simulated lesions, comparing the results of the simulations to empirical functional (fMRI/EEG) data;
  *   Behavioral testing of drug-resistant epileptic patients implanted with intracranial electrodes (e.g., learning, memory, cognition);
  *   Data analysis and whole-brain computational modeling with BrainX3 using the brain data recorded from intracranially implanted electrodes in drug-resistant epileptic patients;
  *   Translation of the BrainX3 models to simulate other brain diseases such as stroke and Alzheimer's disease.

Requirements for candidates:

  *   Experience in EEG data analysis, neuroimaging data analysis knowledge, computational neuroscience, bio-inspired computing, e.g., artificial neurons, experimental work, statistical analysis
  *   Excellent programming skills (e.g., C, C++, Python, MATLAB), experience with computational modeling and data analysis, as well as proven writing skills, self-propelled, and a team player. Familiarity with neuroimaging tools is also appreciated.

  *   Degree/Master in Biological Sciences, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Computer Science, Computational Neuroscience, Physics, or equivalent.
