Connectionists: Postdoc position University of Pittsburgh

Postdoctoral Fellowship available immediately

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh (Oakland campus) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship working with Professor Bard Ermentrout for up to three years, subject to evaluation at the end of each year.  Screening will be done on a rolling basis, starting immediately.

The research area is flexible, but the main areas are the modeling and analysis of spatiotemporal behavior in biology with a focus on (but not restricted to) neuroscience.  Topics of particular interest are the behavior of spatially distributed oscillators, pattern formation, and dynamics of wave propagation in nonlocally coupled systems.  Candidates should have a strong background in dynamical systems, some knowledge of stochastic processes, and some expertise in computation such as Python, MatLab, or XPP.   Candidates may be expected participate in discussions  with some experimental neuroscientists as necessary for the research.   Responsibilities include teaching two courses per year, participating in research seminars and the possible mentoring of undergraduate students.

 This position is funded for three years, and a highly competitive salary is available for qualified candidates.

Pittsburgh is a medium-sized city with a relatively low cost of living and many of the amenities and cultural opportunities of a larger city. The Neuroscience community in Pittsburgh is large and very diverse with more than 100 faculty members affiliated with the Center for Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh. Successful candidates would also have the opportunity to join the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition which is a joint University of Pittsburgh/CMU center that involves nearly 100 Faculty from the two Universities.

Required Qualifications

Completion of a Ph.D. degree in mathematics or a closely related field is required prior to the start of appointment. Applicants should have experience teaching in mathematics.
