The Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University, Finland, invites applications for two (2) fixed-term full-time Project Researcher or Research Assistant positions for a period from October 1st, 2019 to August 31st, 2022. If the project advances well, it may get extension, in which case the positions may be extended.


Job description

The research takes place in the Academy of Finland Strategic Research Council funded project ”Ethical AI in the governance of society” (ETAIROS). The project focuses on ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) and it includes work with partner organisations’ cases, with topics such as safety, autonomous systems, and health.

The task of the first position is to perform research on artificial intelligence systems using formal methods to specify, analyse, and simulate AI systems. The methods are applied to identify and eliminate ethical problems, which will also be specified.

The task of the second position is to perform research on machine learning methods, to develop methods that can systematically identify and eliminate biases generated by data in AI systems.

The research aims to create scientifically significant methods that are applicable in practice. The methods will be tested with partner organisations of the research.


Requirements

The positions are appropriate for doctoral students as a Project Researcher or master’s thesis students as a Research Assistant as long as they graduate after which they can become doctoral students.

The first position requires skills on formal specifications and programming language implementation. 

The second position requires skills in machine learning, data analysis, and statistics.

Both positions require good programming skills and good written and oral communication skills in Finnish, English, or both. Finnish language skills are a benefit as a part of the data used is in Finnish. The selected persons are expected to carry out research leading to a PhD thesis.


We offer

The positions are full time and will be filled for a fixed-term until August 31, 2022. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees

The salary will be based on both the job demands and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the University Salary System. The position of Research Assistant is placed on the job demand level 1 and position of Project Researcher on the job demand level 2 to 3 (the demand level chart for the teaching and research staff). In addition, employees will receive performance-based salary.
