The Machine Learning Team at the National Institute of Mental Health in
Bethesda, MD, has an open position for a research assistant, under the
National Institutes of Health IRTA program.

Our mission is to help local scientists use machine learning methods to
address research problems in clinical and cognitive psychology and
neuroscience. We work with very large brain imaging datasets, in many
different imaging modalities, as well as behavioral data, picture and text
corpora, etc. We also develop new machine learning methods and publish in
the main machine learning conferences, and in psychology and neuroscience
journals.

You would be working with us on all of these activities and have the
opportunity to be the lead on some of the projects, as well as co-author on
other publications. As part of these efforts, you would actively contribute
(e.g. write python code and design experiments), as well as learn more
about machine learning (e.g. read papers, attend courses and conferences,
and be taught one-on-one). We have very good computational resources, both
of our own (tens of GPUs for deep learning) and shared with other
institutes (a top-100 supercomputer with hundreds of thousands of CPUs, and
hundreds of GPUs). This is an ideal position for someone who plans on
applying to graduate school in machine learning or a related discipline.
The knowledge you will acquire, the potential publication record, and our
support in preparing your graduate application will both improve your
prospects, and help you in any other career path.

Candidates should be in the final year of an undergraduate degree in
computer science, mathematics, statistics, biomedical engineering, or
physics; we can also consider other areas, given adequate programming and
research experience. If you would like to be considered for this position,
please email francisco.pereira at nih.gov an application letter and a CV,
highlighting your programming experience and participation in research
projects. Other inquiries are also welcome. Thank you for your interest!

Applications received by January 7th, 2019 will receive full consideration,
but applications will be accepted until the position is filled. DHHS and
NIH are Equal Opportunity Employers.
