Full Professorship for Neuromorphic Computing (W3)

The position will be hosted at the Kirchhoff Institute for Physics.

We are searching for a scientist with a strong interest and proven research record in the theoretical principles underlying neuromorphic computation. Specific areas of research include, but are not limited to computation with stochastic processes, mechanisms of self-organization and learning, biophysical models of information processing in neural cells and networks, multi-scale theories of neural circuits, brain-inspired theories of machine learning and the development of common approaches with the theory of complex many-particle systems. A close collaboration with the existing experimental group working on electronic implementations of neuromorphic physical models in non-von Neumann computer architectures is expected. The successful candidate will take an active role in establishing the scientific program of the new European Institute for Neuromorphic Computing (EINC), which will move into a dedicated building in 2020.

Heidelberg is a leading German research university offering a thriving research community with ample opportunities for collaboration, including the Institute for Theoretical Physics (ITP), the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR), the Institute for Computer Engineering (ZITI), the Center for Quantum Dynamics (CQD), the Center for Advanced Materials (CAM) and many others.

The successful candidate is expected to participate in the bachelor and master teaching programs of the Department of Physics and Astronomy in accordance with the usual University obligations.

Prerequisites for application are a university degree and (in accordance with Article 47, paragraph 2 of the Higher Education Law of the State of Baden-Württemberg) a Habilitation, a successfully evaluated junior professorship or equivalent qualification. The University of Heidelberg seeks to achieve a higher proportion of women in areas where they have not been adequately represented so far.
