This is relevant indeed. You should have told me last year when I had a series of drafts under massive open online peer review here on the connectionists mailing list :-) Of course, I’ll keep it in mind for future updates.
Sec. 4.3 and 6.5 of the survey, however, do mention the famous earlier grammar-based work: Multiple levels of more and more abstract data representations can be learned by methods of syntactic pattern recognition (Fu, 1977) such as grammar induction, which discovers hierarchies of formal rules to model observations.
