Connectionists: Research Assistant position in Cognitive/Developmental Psychology at the University of Nottingham - Malaysia Campus

please circulate the following advertisement for a position of Research Assistant in Cognitive/Developmental Psychology at the University of Nottingham - Malaysia Campus.

Applications are invited for a full-time Research Assistant position based within the School of Psychology of the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. The position is for three years and the individual will be required to undertake an MPhil/PhD degree for which the fees will be waived. The position will also include three years of stipend (at RM 1700 per month). Applicants must possess a 1st or upper 2nd class degree or Masters in a relevant subject, an appropriate English Language qualification and evidence of an aptitude for research. The applicant will select to work on one of the following projects:

1. Development of a computational model of phoneme and lexical acquisition.
The aim of this project is to develop a model that will capture language development at the phonemic and lexical levels, with special foci on native vs. non-native phoneme discrimination patterns and on bilingualism. Fluency in Matlab or a strong commitment to learn is expected from the successful candidate.

2. Experimental research into learning mechanisms involved in early word learning.
The aim of this project is to describe the learning mechanisms infants and young children use when learning new words. The project will be carried out using tablet-based experiment in order to test infants and young children outside of the laboratory. Questions will focus on: selectivity of word-object associations, domain-specificity of lexical biases, interaction between phoneme and lexical processing. The successful candidate will need to be eager to work with infants and young children.
