Connectionists: developmental robotics

Dear Gary,

for some historical reasons, the term “developmental approach” is indeed sometimes associated to “blank slate” approaches. But to me, this association is (should be) rather an oxymoron.
I would say many active contributors of the developmental robotics community today rather explore Piagetian and Vygotskian legacies, neither innatists nor empiricists,
rather focusing on the processes of guided change of sensorimotor, cognitive and social structures.

(You can certainly find papers targetting “tabula rasa” learning and using the term "developmental robotics", but I would say this is a minority of papers in the the last 6-7 years
in this field, and by the way it is useful that some try to study the extents and limits of tabula rasa approaches).

And so yes, there are references of papers where sophisticated developmental architectures are used as starting points, and at various stages of the developmental path.

With regards to low-level sensorimotor development in high-dimensional bodies, a perspective is provided in [1], where the integration of peculiar active information seeking [2],
maturational [3], morphological [4], goal-based [5] and social guidance [6] mechanisms is argued to be essential (we are here far away from the blank slate).
Other groups developped similar argumentations, for example concerning the role of body growth in fetal development [7], and the global organization of motor learning into organized stages [8].

Some of the ideas of Chomsky and other structuralists related to algebraic, compositional and recursive mechanisms for higher level cognition are now actually being adapted
to motor and action control within a developmental view, such as for example in work identifying and using primitives and compositional structures for action [9, 10], and some of us even talk
of a minimalist grammar for action [11].

As far as language development is concerned, I would even say that most work I know assumes advanced prior computational structures for things like unification and recursion,
within hybrid neural architectures [12] or based on older more classical computational architectures now used in concert with statistical inference for studying the development of grammatical structures in artificial agents [13, 14, 15]. Not everyone though pre-supposes those high-level symbolic compositional capabilities (some study their very formation out of neural architectures [18]), but in that case they still often consider as the central object of study the role of constraints, such as for example the role of embodiment and social cues to guide a statistical learner to pick regularities in language acquisition [16, 17].
