Several PhD & postdoc positions are available in the research group on
machine learning, optimization, and automated algorithm design at the
University of Freiburg, Germany. Research projects focus on two areas:
- AutoML, which aims to automate many of the tasks that have traditionally
been left to machine learning experts, such as hyperparameter optimization,
model search, and architecture selection in deep learning (see automl.org);
and
- Automated algorithm design in other areas, in particular for solving
NP-hard problems.

The salary scale for full-time positions is TV-L E13 (with a monthly gross
salary between 3370 EUR and 4860 EUR, depending on experience and previous
position).

Applicants should have an excellent first academic degree in artificial
intelligence, machine learning, computer science, statistics or a related
discipline. Demonstrated general knowledge in machine learning is a
requirement, and experience in one or more of the following areas is an
advantage:
- Algorithm configuration and selection
- Bayesian optimization and stochastic optimization
- Discrete optimization and NP-hard problem solving
- Hyperparameter optimization
- Meta learning and transfer learning
- Active learning and experimental design
- Deep learning
- Gaussian processes

Application deadline: June 11, 2014.
