PhD Studentship

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in theoretical and computational neuroscience in the Centre for Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience at the University of Plymouth, UK, for up to four years starting in September 2006. The studentship is funded by a Doctoral Training Grant to the Centre from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).

Applicants must normally hold a first or upper second class honours degree or equivalent qualification, or a masters degree, in an appropriate discipline, and have a strong interest in studying information processing in the brain using mathematical and computational modelling methods in combination with physiological, psychophysical, EEG/ERP or fMRI experimental methods/data.

Projects are available in a number of research areas within the interests of the Centre (see www.plymneuro.org.uk for further details). Examples of available projects include:

-	mathematical and computational modelling of the basal ganglia and Deep Brain Stimulation
-	the neural correlates of auditory perceptual organisation: a combined fMRI and computational modelling study
-	dynamical data analysis and network simulation of neural activity and its relation to active memory functions.
-	multiscale modelling of neocortical information processing

To be eligible for the full studentship, ie full tuition fees and a maintenance award of at least £12500 pa, candidates must demonstrate a relevant connection with the UK, usually through being ordinarily resident for a period of 3 years immediately prior to the date of application for an award. Nationality or country of origin is not a criterion for eligibility. Nationals of member states of the European Union other than the UK are eligible for fees-only awards if they are resident in their own country in the same way that other candidates are required to be resident in the UK.

Informal enquiries should be made to Professor Mike Denham, Centre for Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience, University of Plymouth, Drake Circus, Plymouth, PL4 8AA, UK; tel: +44 (0)1752 232547; email: mdenham at plym.ac.uk.

Further particulars concerning the studentship and an application form may be found at (http://www.plymouth.ac.uk/pghowtoapply) or by contacting Ann Treeby (ann.treeby at plymouth.ac.uk <mailto:debbie.petherick at plymouth.ac.uk> ).

Please return all applications to: Mrs Ann Treeby, Faculty of Science Research Admin Assistant, University of Plymouth, Rm A504, Portland Square, Plymouth, PL4 8AA

The closing date for applications is 12 noon on 7th July 2006. Interviews will take place in July. Applicants who have not received an invitation for interview by the end of July 2006 should consider their application as unsuccessful.
