The Bioinformatics Lab of the Academic Medical Center (AMC) in Amsterdam
(http://www.amc.nl) seeks qualified applicants for a PhD position in a
project on the identification of missing genes in metabolic pathways and
the reconstruction of eukaryotic biological pathways.

The candidate will develop machine learning methods for the annotation
and reconstruction of biological networks using different types of
experimental data. Such an integrative machine learning approach will be
pursued for the development of ranking methods to identify missing genes
in metabolic pathways. Furthermore, the candidate will develop
kernel-based methods for the reconstruction of biological networks.

The PhD position is part of the BioRange (funding from the Dutch
government) project "Understanding and reconstruction of eukaryotic
biological pathways from microarray data", which is a collaboration
between the Bioinformatics Laboratory (AMC), department of Human
Genetics (AMC), the BiGCat Bioinformatics group (University of
Maastricht) and the department of Biomedical Engineering (Eindhoven
University of Technology). The candidate is expected to actively engage
in this collaboration. This project is tightly linked to ongoing AMC
research projects generating various types of genomic data.

The ideal candidate should have a Master's degree in computer science,
mathematics or physics. (S)he has a strong background in machine
learning more specifically kernel methods and semi-supervised learning.
Knowledge of bioinformatics and molecular biology, programming skills
(C, Java, SQL, UNIX), and experience in a high-level language such as
R(/Bioconductor) are an asset.

Appointment for a PhD position is for four years. Monthly gross salary
ranges from Euro 1.942 (first year) to Euro 2.465 (last year). Starting
data is immediate.

For more information on the BioRange project, see
