The present thread will remain incomplete without reference to what
Popper has to say on this matter. For a strong case against the
mystification of physics, see

Karl R. Popper
Quantum Theory and the Schism in Physics
from the Postscript to "The Logic of Scientific Discovery"
Edited by W. W. Bartley
Unwin Hyman: London, 1982

-Shimon

p.s. Popper, contrary to what could be expected from his being a
dualist about the so-called "mind-body problem", is actually very much
a realist about other, more important issues in science. Consequently,
one can ignore his "The Self and its Brain" (a bad influence of J.
Eccles? :-), and still benefit from the earlier (and better) "The
Logic of Scientific Discovery".
