Research topic needed

I don't mean to flame Boon Tan (btan at cowan.edu.au), but shouldn't the
question be one of finding a customer?  Or a real-world problem?

Too many thesis projects serve no purpose beyond getting the degree,
one appearance at a major conference, and perhaps a journal article.
As long as you're looking for a topic, it would be best to choose one
with value outside a single academic department.  Neural networks for
control of sheep shearing might not interest the Neural Gurus, but at
least there be hope of doing the world some good.

Or is that total inappropriate at the doctoral level?
