PhD research position available - Satellite Image Classification by
Binary Neural Networks

http://www.cs.york.ac.uk/arch
The Advanced Computer Architectures Group invites applications for an
EPSRC-funded studentship to study the application of the AURA neural
network (http://www.cs.york.ac.uk/arch/nn/aura.html) to the analysis of
satellite images. The studentship is available immediately.
The principal area of research is into pixel classification in satellite
images, concentrating on the methodological issues surrounding
representation of data to the network, and the characterisation of the
network's generalisation behaviour. Demonstration of the classification
abilities of the network is as important as the development of the
theoretical framework, and test data will be available from a number of
sources, including satellite images but also other types of data.
Applicants should have a good first degree in computer science,
mathematics/statistics or a related discipline. Informal queries should
be
addressed to Dr Simon O'Keefe (email: sok at cs.york.ac.uk), but note that
formal applications must be received by 18th March 2002.
Applicants should contact the Graduate Secretary at the address below
for an application form.

This studentship covers maintenance, and tuition at the UK/EU rate.
Applicants from outside the EU will need to pay the balance of the fees.
Funding rules dictate that the start date for the studentship must be NO
LATER THAN 1st MAY 2002.
Because of the short timescales, applications should be returned
DIRECTLY TO THE GRADUATE SECRETARY AND NOT VIA THE UNIVERSITY ADMISSIONS
OFFICE. Applications MUST be received by 18th MARCH 2002. It is
anticipated that interviews will be held in the middle of April 2002.
