Postdoctoral Research Fellowship

Aston University, Birmingham, UK

NAOC: Neural network Algorithms for Ocean Colour

We are looking for a highly motivated individual for a 3 year
postdoctoral research position in the area of the analysis of
multi-spectral, remotely sensed data.

The emphasis of this research will be on developing and applying data
modelling, visualisation and analysis algorithms to measurements of the
'ocean colour' across the electro-magnetic spectrum to generate
estimates of chlorophyll-A concentrations using satellite observations. This will
allow a better understanding of the distribution of primary biological
production and the global carbon cycle. You will be working in a team from seven
institutions around the EuropeanUnion, and there is scope for a great deal of
interaction. For more details, see the NAOC web site
http://www.ncrg.aston.ac.uk/~cornfosd/naoc/.

You will work in the Neural Computing Research Group which has a
worldwide reputation in practical and theoretical aspects of information
analysis.

Applicants should have strong mathematical and computational skills;
some knowledge of remote sensing would be an advantage. We expect to use
methods such as the Generative Topographic Mapping (GTM) to model the
unconditional probability distribution of the ocean colour data, and
then combine this with expert labelling to perform 'unsupervised'
classification. We will also develop spatial (Gaussian process) models of the abundance
of phytoplankton to aid field-wise (Bayesian) ocean colour retrieval.

Candidates should hold (or imminently expect to gain) a PhD in
Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Remote Sensing or a related field.
Experience of programming (especially MATLAB or C/C++) and a knowledge
of Unix would be an advantage. Salaries will be up to point 6 on the RA 1A
scale, currently 18731 UK pounds per annum. The salary scale is subject to
annual increments.

If you wish to be considered for this Fellowship, please send a full CV
and publications list, including full details and grades of academic
qualifications, together with the names of 3 referees, quoting reference
