           ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE in MEDICINE

                 SPECIAL ISSUE on
KNOWLEDGE - BASED NEUROCOMPUTING in MEDICINE
***************************************************************************

The journal Artificial Intelligence in Medicine
(http://www.elsevier.nl/locate/artmed) invites contributions for a
Special Issue on Knowledge-Based Neurocomputing in Medicine. Full
papers should be sent to the address below and are due by 30 April
2001. The journal's web site contains guidelines for authors.

Knowledge-Based Neurocomputing, the topic of a recently published book
(http://www.i-u.de/schools/cloete/book.htm) edited by Ian Cloete and
Jacek M. Zurada, focuses on methods to encode prior knowledge and to
extract, refine, and revise knowledge within a neurocomputing
system. The journal calls for papers on knowledge-based artificial
neural networks within a medical application area.

A paper should address at least the following three components:
neurocomputing, processing of knowledge, and a medical application
area. Of course state-of-the-art research is required, however, the
contributions may either be theoretical with a medical line of thought
or medical application-oriented with results and a discussion. Each
contribution may be 20 to 25 pages long.

Contributors who would like to be considered for invited papers are
requested to contact the guest editor, Ian Cloete (ian.cloete at i-u.de),
for consideration. Please send an extended abstract of at least 3 A4
pages describing your proposed contribution, preferably in postscript
or pdf format by email, or to the address given below, by 31 December
2000. Further information on the call for papers will be posted on the
web page http://www.i-u.de/schools/cloete/aimcfp.htm
