Several tenure-track postions are open in the Department of
Information and Computer Science at UC Irvine. In particular,
we are looking for candidates in biological and medical
informatics.

The Department of Information and Computer Science
(ICS) at the University of California, Irvine (UCI)
has a tenure-track position open in the area
of bioinformatics, medical informatics, or computational
biology. The Department has a strong presence in this area
with 5 full-time faculty in biomedical informatics and many
faculty from within the Department and throughout the University
with whom they collaborate (see http://www.ics.uci.edu/~biomed/).

The available position is at the assistant professor
level, but exceptional candidates from all ranks will
be considered. In all cases, we are looking for
applicants with a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science,
Medical Informatics, Bioinformatics or a related field,
as well as strong research credentials as evidenced by
scholarly publications. Applicants for senior positions
must also demonstrate a proven track record in original
research and teaching activities.

The ICS department runs a concentration in
Informatics in Biology and Medicine and
there are outstanding opportunities for interdiscipinary collaborations
at all levels with the School of Biological Sciences, the School of Physical
Sciences,
the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the College of Medicine at UCI.
ICS faculty are also closely affiliated with the new
Institute for Genomics and Bioinformatics (http://www.igb.uci.edu).

The Department and UCI are poised for exceptional growth in
the coming years. The ICS Department is organized as an independent campus
unit reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor.
It is the largest computer science department
within the University of California.
It runs
the second most popular major at UCI and has designed an
undergraduate honors program that attracts the campus' most
qualified students. External funding from government and
industrial sponsors exceeded $10 million last year. The
Department currently has 38 full-time faculty and 200 Ph.D.
students involved in various research areas including
analysis of algorithms and data structures, artificial
intelligence and machine learning, hardware-software
co-design, parallel and distributed processing, embedded
systems, communication networks, middleware technology,
security and cryptography, databases, information retrieval
and visualization, computational biology and medical
informatics, computer graphics, human computer interaction
and computer supported cooperative work, programming
languages, software development and advanced software
technology. The faculty have productive interdisciplinary
ties with colleagues in the arts, biology, cognitive science,
engineering, management, medicine, and the social sciences.

Although UCI is a young university, it has attained
remarkable stature in the past 3 decades. Two Nobel
prizes were recently awarded to UCI faculty. UCI is
located three miles from the Pacific Ocean near Newport
Beach, approximately forty miles south of Los Angeles.
The climate is ideal year-round avoiding extreme
temperatures in winters and summers. Irvine is
consistently ranked among the safest cities in the U.S.
and has an exceptional public school system. The campus
is surrounded by high-technology companies that
participate in an active affiliates program. Both the
campus and the area offer exciting professional and
cultural opportunities. Mortgage and housing assistance
are available including newly built, for-sale housing
located on campus and within short walking distance from
the department.
