Title: Intelligent Sound and Image Processing Systems

The goal of this project is to develop software that can process
sounds and images in a more humanlike fashion so that a recognition
system can work robustly in real-world environments. Recent advances
in data processing technologies have led to several human computer
interface applications such as automatic speech recognition systems
and visual object recognition systems. Although some commercial
products are currently available, the performance of those systems
usually degrades substantially under real-world conditions. For
example, a speech recognition system in an automobile may process
voice commands when spoken in a quiet situation, but the recognition
performance may be unacceptable with the presence of interfering
sounds such as the car engine noise, music, and other voices in the
background. In contrast, humans are able to recognize speech under
very noisy conditions. The goal of the project is to develop software
that can enhance the sound or image signal using a newly developed
technique called ICA (independent component analysis). ICA is able to
separate sounds or images when the environment has mixed them. This
software is an important step in advancing computer systems closer to
humanlike performance and hence will make the human machine
interaction more natural. Furthermore, the software will enhance the
communication between the sending and receiving units in a noisy
environment where the receiver can get clean audio-visual information.

Qualifications:

Background in signal processing, image processing, machine learning
algorithms, neural networks and pattern recognition is desirable.
Matlab and C programming skills are required.

Our Lab:

Successful candidates will join the Neuroengineering Laboratory at the
Institute for Neural Computation. The Institute is an
interdisciplinary organized research unit at UCSD directed by Terrence
J. Sejnowski. The 45 faculty members in the Institute represent 14
research disciplines, including neuroscience, visual science,
cognitive science, mathematics, economics and social science, and
computer engineering, and addresses the twin scientific and
engineering challenges of understanding how humans function at the
neural and cognitive levels and solve major technological problems
related to neural network implementations (see http://inc.ucsd.edu/).
The Neuroengineering Laboratory currently consists of three research
faculty who work with postdoctoral fellows, graduate students and
visiting scientists, in collaboration with other researchers in
electrical and computer engineering, cognitive science, neurosciences,
as well as with industry.
