           | UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD |
           | CENTRE FOR COGNITIVE NEUROSCIENCE |
           +-------------------------------------------+

The Centre, which is funded by grants from the Medical Research Council
and the McDonnell-Pew Program, supports collaborative, interdisciplinary
research on many aspects of brain function relevant to human cognition, in
several departments at Oxford.

Computational Neuroscientist (Ref IRC2)

This appointment, for computational approaches to cognitive function, will
probably be made for three years in the first instance, on the RSII scale
(21,016 - 27,935 UKP), or on the RS1A scale (15,159 - 22,785 UKP),
depending on experience and specified duties. The post holder should have
a PhD or equivalent experience, evidence of a capacity for independent
research, and expertise in the mathematical analysis of neuronal networks
and/or other computational approaches to neuroscience. S/he will work
with neuroscientists to develop biologically constrained models of
cortical function. S/he will probably have the opportunity to supervise
graduate students and to participate in organising seminars and workshops.

Computer Officer (Ref McDPCO)

Applications are invited from individuals, with extensive experience of
modern computing techniques, for the above post, for three years in the
first instance, full-time (or for a longer period part-time, pro rata), on
the RS1A scale (15,159 - 22,785 UKP) or RSII scale (21,016 - 27,935 UKP),
depending on experience and specified duties. The person appointed to
this post will carry the main responsibility for supporting
computing-related research activities in the Centre. The present
facilities include a network of Unix workstations (Sun/SGI) and PCs using
MS Windows 95/NT. The work will involve varied project-based programming
using C or C++, general computing support, training of research staff and
liaising with existing computer staff. Knowledge of experimental control
programs or system administration (Unix/PC) would be an advantage.

Further information is available from the Centre Web site
(http://www.physiol.ox.ac.uk/mcdp/jobs) or from the Administrative
Secretary, Harriet Fishman, University Laboratory of Physiology, Parks
Road, Oxford OX1 3PT. Tel: 01865-272497; Fax: 01865-272488.

Applicants should write, quoting the reference number of the post and
enclosing a full curriculum vitae together with names and addresses of two
referees, to the Assistant Administrator, University Laboratory of
Physiology, Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3PT.

Closing date is 10 July 1998.

The University is an equal opportunity employer.
