CALL FOR PAPERS

-------------------------------------------
AUTONOMOUS ROBOTICS and ADAPTIVE BEHAVIOUR
-------------------------------------------

A module of ICANN 98, the 8th International Conference on
Artificial Neural Networks, Skoevde, Sweden, 2-4 Sept. 1998

-----------------
INVITED SPEAKERS
-----------------

Invited speakers for this module are

	* Rodney Brooks, MIT AI Lab, Cambridge, USA
	* Phil Husbands, COGS, University of Sussex, UK

------
SCOPE
------

The adaptivity and flexibility of artificial neural networks (ANNs),
as well as their capacity for learning and self-organisation, make
them ideal candidates for the control of autonomous robots. For the
same reasons, ANNs and ANN-controlled robots are also increasingly
being used to model biological mechanisms underlying the adaptive
behaviour of animals. Shared characteristics of biological and arti-
ficial autonomous agents include embodiment, situatedness, and the
requirement to exhibit adaptive behaviour in sensorimotor interaction
with dynamic environments.

This module of ICANN 98 covers the use of ANN techniques for adaptive
control of autonomous robots as well as ANN/robotic models of animal
behaviour. Possible topics include, but are not restricted to:

* adaptive behaviour in biological and artificial autonomous agents
* ANN learning methods for adaptation, control and navigation
* communication, cooperation and collective behaviour in multi-agent
	systems
* the role of representation in embodied/situated/autonomous systems
* dynamics of agent-environment interaction
* biologically and ethologically inspired agent modelling
* evolutionary robotics and artificial life
* cognitive robotics and embodied cognition
